As water recedes in Vadodara, govt plans Rs 1,200-crore river redevelopment project

The water level in the Vishwamitri river came down from 37 feet to 32 feet by Thursday though several low-lying areas are still inundated. The river had crossed the danger mark of 25 feet on Tuesday morning following heavy rains and the release of water from Ajwa dam.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel Thursday announced a package worth Rs 1,200 crore for the Vishwamitri River Revival and Redevelopment Project in Vadodara. He made the announcement as he visited flood-hit people who were relocated to Pensionpura.  The revamp project has been in the pipeline for over a decade to create a “complete water management project”.

Earlier in the day, state Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, said that a total of 11 people have died due to floods in Vadodara from Tuesday. Across the state since Monday, the incessant rain has claimed 35 lives, including 13 due to collapse of wall or kutcha houses, 20 due to drowning and two after falling of trees.

“Also, 2,572 people have been rescued and 32,933 people moved to safer locations between August 25 and 29,” Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey told The Indian Express. As on Thursday, Gujarat has recorded 109 per cent of the average rainfall this monsoon season. Meanwhile, on the frequent flood situation owing to the Vishwamitri river in Vadodara, Sanghavi said the government would “discuss the issue” but currently, “conducting relief and rescue operations” was of priority.
