14 child labourers rescued from textile factory

The Labour Department rescued 14 child labourers from a textile factory,a zardozi unit and a tea stall in separate raids in Surat on Monday afternoon. Labour Department officials along with factory inspectors and the police conducted raids on Raj Laxmi Dyeing and Printing Mills at Pandesara in Surat and rescued three child workers from the dyeing department. Factory owner Rajendra Patel tried to effect a negotiation but failed.

The Labour Department officials also raided a flat on the fourth floor in a complex at Gopipura Momnawad. Upon finding the door locked from the outside,they broke open the door and found 10 children working in the zardozi unit owned by one Asgar Shaikh. The officials also rescued a minor boy of below eight years from a tea stall at Katargam near Amroli Bridge. All the rescued children were later sent to the Katargam juvenile home in the evening.

Assistant Labour Commissioner Kirit Patel said: “The rescued children were below the age of 14 years and the majority of them were from Bihar. We have decided to take legal action against the owner of Rajlaxmi Dyeing and Printing Mill as also Asgar Shaikh.”
