Mark Rutte BIOGRAPHY

Last Updated : 06 Jan 2025
Mark Rutte: A Pragmatic Leader’s Long Reign Born 14 February 1967, Mark Rutte served as the Netherlands’ Prime Minister from 2010 to 2024, the longest tenure in Dutch history. His political career began in 2002, joining Jan Peter Balkenende’s cabinets after a business management career at Unilever. He ascended to lead the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in 2006, leading them to victory in the 2010 general election, becoming the first liberal Prime Minister in 92 years. Rutte’s premiership was marked by several coalition governments, navigating complex negotiations and political landscapes. His second cabinet, a coalition with the Labour Party (PvdA), notably completed a full four-year term—a rarity in Dutch politics. While the VVD remained the largest party after the 2017 and 2021 elections, his governments faced challenges, including the Dutch childcare benefits scandal that prompted a resignation in 2021. His fourth term ended in July 2023, with his government resigning over disagreements on migration policy. His pragmatic approach, described as ideologically flexible, allowed him to build consensus across diverse political factions. He assumed the role of NATO Secretary General in October 2024. His political legacy includes a long tenure marked by both successes and controversies. His ability to maintain popularity despite various crises earned him the nickname "Teflon Mark".
