Rae Bareli Election Results 2024: After 7 hours of counting, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Tuesday won the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh by a margin of over 4 lakh votes, more than double the gap sitting MP and his mother Sonia Gandhi had with her rival in 2019.
With over 670,000 votes, Rahul emerged victorious while BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh was placed in a distant second position and BSP’s Thakur Prasad Yadav third.
In the Lok Sabha 2024 elections, Rae Bareli opened its EVMs and ballot boxes in Phase 5 on May 20, where a political fray was witnessed between new faces as Lok Sabha candidates. After being elected to the Rajya Sabha, the sitting MP from Congress, Sonia Gandhi, decided not to contest the Lok Sabha elections.
However, in hopes of capitalising on the Gandhi family’s legacy in the constituency, in the Lok Sabha 2024 elections, Rahul Gandhi has been nominated as the candidate, against the BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh and Thakur Prasad Yadav from the BSP, vying for the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat.
In the previous 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi, representing the INC, emerged victorious with a significant lead of 1,67,178 votes, securing a total of 5,34,918 votes, against Dinesh Pratap Singh of the BJP, who garnered 3,67,740 votes.
Established in 1952, the Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli, a significant parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh, is known as a stronghold for Congress, with several prominent leaders from Gandhi family like Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Feroz Gandhi dominating the Raebareli seat and winning 17 out of the 20 Lok Sabha elections contested for this seat (including three by-polls).
Indira Gandhi, one of the most influential prime ministers in the country, held this seat as her bastion for nearly a decade. However, the most successful leader from this constituency is former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who won the last five consecutive Lok Sabha elections from Rae Bareli (including the 2006 by-polls).
