The single-phase elections to the 230-seat Madhya Pradesh Assembly are scheduled on November 17. The results will be declared on December 3, 2023. The Congress and the BJP are geared up for a face off even though AAP has emerged as a new player.
In the 2018, the Congress clinched 114 out of 230 seats — five more than the BJP’s score of 109. In spite of falling short of securing a simple majority, Congress formed the government with the help of four independents. However, this victory proved to be short-lived after 22 Congress MLAs, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, jumped ship to the BJP in 2020. Shivraj Singh Chouhan then returned as the chief minister on March 23, 2020.
