Stay away from downtown,” Austin police said in a message on Twitter. It was not immediately clear how many people were shot.
A resident who was present at the crime scene shot a video that shows people panicking on hearing gunshots and running down what appears to be a main street. The police, had warned residents to move away from 6th Street.
The Austin Police Department added that there were “separate shootings in the same area”, but did not confirm how many gunman were believed to be involved or where the attack had taken place. It was not clear how many people have been injured in the shooting, but local media reports suggest that one person has been killed.
