Former US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is revoking President Joe Biden’s security clearance and cutting off his access to daily intelligence briefings. Trump described the move as payback for Biden’s 2021 decision to end Trump’s own access to classified information.
“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information,” Trump wrote on social media shortly after arriving at his Mar-a-Lago resort for the weekend. “Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden’s security clearances and stopping his daily intelligence briefings.”
Trump claimed that Biden had set this precedent, saying, “He set this precedent in 2021, when he instructed the Intelligence Community (IC) to stop the 45th President of the United States (ME!) from accessing details on national security, a courtesy provided to former presidents.” Biden has not yet responded to Trump’s announcement.
Back in 2021, Biden had justified revoking Trump’s briefings by pointing to Trump’s role in trying to overturn the 2020 election results and inciting the January 6 Capitol riot. At the time, Biden argued that Trump’s “erratic” behaviour made him unfit to receive sensitive intelligence.
In his latest post, Trump also referred to the special counsel report on Biden’s handling of classified documents. “The Hur Report revealed that Biden suffers from poor memory and, even in his prime, could not be trusted with sensitive information,” Trump claimed.
He concluded his statement with a dramatic sign-off: “I will always protect our national security — JOE, YOU’RE FIRED. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
