Stripe, the payment processing company, recently laid off 300 employees, or roughly 3.5% of its global workforce, as part of its annual review and planning for growth. However, the termination notifications were marred by an accidental image of a yellow cartoon duck being sent to some affected employees, reported CNN.
In addition, some emails included incorrect termination dates, further compounding the blunder.
Rob McIntosh, Stripe’s chief people officer, addressed the mistake in a memo, apologizing for the error and confirming that corrected notifications had been sent to all impacted employees.
The layoffs are part of an annual review and planning for growth, a spokesperson for Stripe confirmed. Stripe, which had around 8,500 employees before the layoffs, aims to expand its workforce to 10,000 by year-end.
This incident follows Stripe’s previous layoffs in 2022, when the company reduced its staff by 14% amid a wider wave of tech industry cutbacks.
