Russia and Ukraine faced attacks on Tuesday, with Russian air strikes in Kyiv killing at least one person and Russia’s defence ministry blamed Ukraine for an early morning drone attack.
“This morning, the Kyiv regime launched a terrorist attack with unmanned aerial vehicles on premises in the city of Moscow,” Russia’s defence ministry said, as per a report in Reuters. “Eight unmanned aerial vehicles were involved in the attack. All enemy drones were hit.”
Russia’s pre-dawn attack on Ukraine’s capital city sent thousands scrambling to take shelter in metro stations and other underground shelters. This is said to be the third Russian attack on the country in the last 24 hours. “The attack was massive, came from different directions, in several waves,” Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said on the Telegram messaging channel, reported then news agency Reuters.
Here’s a quick guide to the latest Russia-Ukraine attacks:
Russian missiles and drones rained down on Kyiv early today, in what is said to be the third attack on the Ukrainian capital in 24 hours. "A massive attack!" Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app, as per a Reuters report. The mayor warned citizens not to leave the underground shelters.
The Kyiv Military Administration said that more than 20 Shahed drones were destroyed by air defence forces in Kyiv's airspace, as per a Reuters report. Shahed drones are Iranian-made devices which are pre-programmed with coordinates and use GPS data to attack their targets.
As per initial reports, at least one person was killed and four others injured when a high-rise building in Kyiv's Holosiiv district caught fire. Photos on social media showed flames coming from the two upper floors. Parts of several buildings were reduced to rubble. A more recent report in Kyiv Post put the number of injured at more than 13.
A drone strike on Moscow caused "insignificant damage" to buildings in Russia's capital city today, said the Russian government, terming it a “terrorist attack” by the “Kyiv regime.” As per an Associated Press report, eight drones targetted Moscow, which shot down five and jammed the systems of three others, thus veering them off the set course. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that residents of two high-rise buildings damaged in the attack were evacuated.
Ukraine has rejected Russia's accusations and denied involvement in the drones. However, Mykhailo Podolyak, an aide to the Ukrainian President, said that Kyiv was watching the strike "with enjoyment" and predicted more such attacks, reported Reuters.
