The remark of Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachanda, that an Indian businessman settled in Nepal put in a word for him in Delhi to have him appointed as the Prime Minister triggered a controversy in the country as a united Opposition demanded his resignation.
Both Houses of Parliament — Rashtriya Sabha and the House of Representatives — were adjourned for the day after the opposition parties created a ruckus stating that the Prime Minister’s remarks lowered the dignity of the country.
In the House of representatives, the members of the main Opposition Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and the Rashtriya Swatantra Party were on their feet while the pro-monarchy Rahstriya Prajatantra members trooped to the well of the House shouting slogans that “a Prime Minister appointed by New Delhi does not have the right to continue in the post”.
In a function organised by the student wing of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), Prachanda tried to turn the table on the opposition saying, “Like in the past, they are trying to put words into my mouth, but that will not work.”
However, social media is flooded with video clips of his speech that he made on Monday while felicitating Sardar Pritam Singh, an Indian who settled in Nepal more than six decades ago and run a private transport business, on the occasion of the latter’s 90th birthday.
“He (Sardar Pritam Singh) has been very kind and helpful while my daughter Gyanu was undergoing treatment for cancer. He also takes a lot of interest in Politics and once he even went to Delhi to put in a word to make me the Prime Minister,” Dahal purportedly said.
The CPN-UML had asked the PM to step down for his remarks about Delhi’s support to become the Prime Minister, which, the party says, is the “sole responsibility of the sovereign parliament of Nepal.”
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress, the biggest party in the ruling coalition led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has called a meeting of the central executive of the party to discuss the issue.
