Nevada US Election Results 2024: The stage is set, and all eyes are on the seven swing states, including Nevada, which will award six electoral votes to the winner of the US presidential elections. It is also one of the nine states where abortion rights are on the ballot.

It has been over three decades since voters in the state overwhelmingly approved a law permitting abortions until 24 weeks of pregnancy. Now, they must decide if they want to enshrine this as a constitutional right. Supporters in the state and beyond are striving to enhance abortion access following the Supreme Court’s overturning of the landmark Roe v Wade decision, which had legalised abortion nationwide for 50 years. This is a key issue that could galvanise voters in Nevada, even though abortion access has been safeguarded by state law since 1990.

Let’s take a closer look at the battle for Nevada and the issues defining the Harris vs Trump contest in this key state:

📌The 2024 election will be the first test of the measure seeking to enshrine the right to an abortion until the foetus can survive outside the womb, known as “foetal viability”, which medical professionals say is after 21 weeks, with exceptions to save the mother’s life or protect her health. Voters will again need to approve it in 2026 to amend the state constitution.

📌Two different measures on the ballot could change how Nevada residents cast their votes. One aims to open up primaries and implement ranked-choice voting, fundamentally altering elections in this key swing state, where nonpartisan voters outnumber registered Democrats and Republicans, and where 42% of voters do not belong to one of the major parties.

📌The other measure will require voters to show photo identification at the polls. This Republican-led initiative is being presented to voters for the first time and would also need to pass in 2026.

📌Both presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, have campaigned in Nevada—the Silver State—multiple times this season. According to the latest polls, the state is set for a tight contest, with the difference between the two candidates being around 1 percent.

The latest Emerson College poll indicates both Republicans and Democrats at 48 percent each, while the NY Times/Siena College poll shows Harris leading at 49 percent against Trump’s 46 percent.

📌The Democrats have won six of the last eight presidential elections in Nevada, although the margin has consistently narrowed with each election. In 2008, Barack Obama won Nevada by over 12 percentage points, which decreased to less than 7 points in 2012. In 2016, Hillary Clinton secured Nevada by a narrow margin of less than 3 points (2.42 percent) over Trump, and in 2020, Joe Biden won Nevada by just 2.39 percent.

Additionally, Nevada will witness a battle between Democrat Senator Jacky Rosen and Republican Sam Brown as they compete for a six-year Senate term.
