French President Emmanuel Macron was briefly delayed in New York on Tuesday when police stopped his vehicle to make way for the motorcade of US President Donald Trump.
Macron was travelling back to the French Embassy from the United Nations General Assembly when the incident occurred. Videos shared on social media showed him stepping out of his car. Macron made a quick call to President Trump. He joked: “Guess what? I’m stuck in the street because everything’s blocked for you.”
The road was later reopened for pedestrians, and Macron continued on foot, walking through the streets, greeting people and taking photographs before reaching the embassy.
Macron is in New York for the 80th UN General Assembly, where France co-hosted a summit with Saudi Arabia that announced recognition of a Palestinian state, marking a notable diplomatic development.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticised the decision, saying the countries were “rewarding terror with enormous prize.”
