The top leadership of Palestinian militant group Hamas has survived the Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, an official has claimed. Khalil al-Hayya and other Hamas leaders who were meeting to discuss US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal were the target of the Israeli airstrike in the Qatari capital.

Suhail al-Hindi, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, told Al Jazeera that the group’s leadership was unhurt in the attack.

He, however, confirmed that the attack killed al-Hayya’s son, Humam, and one of his top aides. A total of five people have been killed in the airstrike, including Humam and Jihad Labad Abu Bilal, the director of al-Hayya’s office, and three bodyguards.

Qatar’s Interior Ministry on Tuesday said a member of the country’s security forces was killed and others were injured at the site of the Israeli strikes.

“Specialised crews are continuing to inspect and secure the targeted area with the explosives division of the internal security forces,” the ministry said.

Qatar suspends Gaza mediation

Responding to the airstrike, Qatar also said it has suspended its mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas toward a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal. Throughout the conflict Qatar has served as a key negotiator in efforts to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Israel confidant about killing Hamas leaders

The Hamas official’s comments contradict the Israeli claim of the airstrike being successful. Israeli media, citing military officials, had reported that they were optimistic about the Hamas leadership being killed in the airstrike.

According to the IDF, the Hamas leaders targeted were responsible for the October 7, 2023, massacre of around 1,200 Israelis, as well as those managing the terror group’s operations for years before that.

In a statement to Israeli media, a senior official said the strike on Hamas’s leadership in Qatar may bring about an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

“The beheading of Hamas’s leadership today in Qatar is a brilliant and powerful operation carried out by the IDF and the Shin Bet in accordance with the directive of the prime minister and defense minister,” the official said.

According to two Israeli officials who spoke with CNN, planning for the “historic operation” took place over two to three months and accelerated in recent weeks.

During Operation Summit of Fire, 10 Israeli Air Force fighter jets dropped over 10 munitions in the strike on Hamas’s leadership in Qatar, according to Israeli military officials.

Doha strike in response to Jerusalem shooting

Commenting on Operation Summit of Fire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “the days are over when terror leaders will enjoy immunity in a particular place.”

Though the operation was being planned for months, Netanyahu said the strike on Tuesday was in response to the Hamas shooting attack in Jerusalem, which killed six Israelis.

“Our enemies must know one thing — since the creation of Israel, the blood of Jews is not cheap,” Netanyahu said while speaking at a US Embassy event in Jerusalem.
