Respite from heat for parts of Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha as IMD forecasts heavy rainfall

A day after facing heat wave to severe heat wave conditions, isolated pockets of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Odisha are likely to receive some respite over the next two days with India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning in these regions.

Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and squally winds (60-70 kmph) are very likely over Gangetic West Bengal on Monday and Tuesday, the IMD forecast stated.

Meanwhile, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Jharkhand and Odisha are likely over the next 5 days, the forecast continued.

On Sunday, temperatures rose to above 40 degrees Celsius in most districts, with Panagarh in Gangetic West Bengal recording 44.5 degrees Celsius – the highest in the region. Karur Paramathi in Tamil Nadu recorded a temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius, whereas Saraikela in Jharkhand recorded the highest maximum daily temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD.

Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Rayalaseema on Tuesday and Wednesday; over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana and south interior Karnataka on Tuesday; and over Kerala and Mahe between Wednesday and Friday, according to the forecast.

The respite comes as a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam in lower tropospheric levels; a cyclonic circulation over northeast Bihar and a trough running from it to North Odisha in lower tropospheric levels; and a strong southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal to Northeast India are very likely to prevail at lower tropospheric levels till Tuesday.

Due to a fresh Western disturbance which is likely to affect Northwest India from May 9, isolated light to moderate rainfall are very likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on Monday, and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between Monday and Wednesday.
