Later, Kohli reflected on his long journey. “I have given this team my youth, prime, and experience. Tried to win it every season, gave it everything I can,” he said, his voice heavy. “Never thought this day would come, was overcome with emotion after we won.”
Kohli also took a moment to acknowledge his longtime RCB teammate and close friend AB de Villiers, who was present at the ground in his role as a television expert. “What ABD has done for the franchise is tremendous,” Kohli said. “Told him, ‘this is as much yours as it is ours’.”
Earlier in the match, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first. Kohli scored a steady 44 off 35 balls, guiding the team to a total of 190/6 in their 20 overs. While the score initially seemed slightly below par, it ultimately proved to be more than enough.
This marked Punjab Kings (PBKS) second appearance in an IPL final, their previous one coming in 2014, when they were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). For RCB, this was their fifth final, having last reached this stage in 2016, where they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SH).
