Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Mission Raniganj has created much buzz on social media. The film based on the rescue of 64 miners at the Raniganj coalfields in West Bengal in 1989 is scheduled to be released on October 6.

Akshay Kumar plays Jaswant Singh Gill, an engineer with Coal India Limited who is credited with leading the rescue operation inside the flooded mines.

Interestingly, amongst the excitement about the movie, an X user noted that a poster of the movie has glaring editing errors. X user @Cine_vichaar noted that the poster, which shows Gill’s character facing a mass of trapped miners, used similar faces multiple times to cover up the space. @Cine_vichaar highlighted the same faces reappearing in the poster.

Commenting on the poster’s shoddy work, an X user remarked, “So many twins were rescued ”. Another person wrote, “The editor doesn’t have control on Ctrl + V”.

People also argued that the poorly made poster might have been done by an underpaid editor. Echoing this view, an X user wrote, “When you negotiate creative fees.”

On Wednesday, Akshay Kumar also shared the same poster on his Instagram account.

The operation in Raniganj, which took place between November 13 to November 16, 1989, is considered to be “India’s first coal mine rescue mission”.

As per SBS Punjabi, 220 miners were working at the affected site on November 13, 1989, when the water table close to where they were working started flooding the area. Those who were close to the lift managed to escape in time but six of them died. As many as 64 miners escaped the flooding but were trapped.

A team led by Jaswant Singh Gill, who was then posted as the Additional Chief Mining Engineer in the Raniganj area, planned and executed an elaborate rescue operation that involved digging multiple borewells to communicate with the miners and sending them food.

They then built a human-sized capsule that was sent to the miners through a borewell and then pulled upwards as it carried the trapped miners one by one. Gill got into this capsule to reach the miners and came out last.
