In the midst of the continuing outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, Vineeta Singh, a judge on Shark Tank India, criticized the newly introduced safety measures for women in the state by the Mamata Banerjee-led government.

Sharing an image of three people in a cage surrounded by sharks in the middle of the ocean, Vineeta criticised the Bengal’s government safety measures for women working night shifts.

“This week the new West Bengal guidelines for doctors were introduced: “night duty may be avoided for women to the extent possible”. By next month institutions across the country would have done what’s always been the most convenient. Put thousands of MORE restrictions on girls because of course, boys will be boys!” she wrote on Instagram.

“Eventually we can create these giant protective cages for women like the ones used for doing research on sharks, because men will be men! This is NOT the change women are seeking!” Vineeta added.

“Cages are meant for predators, not for the prey,” the Sugar Cosmetics CEO wrote.

The post amassed numerous reactions with a user commenting, “I completely agree. As a mother of a daughter, it terrifies me to think about all the things I need to warn her against.” Another user commented, “Looks like we are in no mood to bring change. And have agreed “Men will be men.”

The West Bengal government on Saturday announced an initiative, “Rattirer Sathi” (night companion) to curb crimes against women in their workplaces. “Rattirer Sathi or woman volunteers shall be on duty at night. Safe zones will be identified and created for women, with full CCTV monitoring. There should be separate designated rest areas with washrooms for women, security guards in the government medical colleges and hospitals, district medical colleges and hospitals as well as hospitals should be a combination of male and female security guards. Security officers will be posted by police in all medical colleges & hospitals and district hospitals for overall security supervision,” Chief Adviser to Chief Minister Alapan Bandyopadhyay told news agency PTI.
