A video showing rats being spotted in utensils inside what is claimed to be the kitchen mess at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Roorkee has caught the attention of social media users. Several students demanded action against the authorities.
According to the viral post, rats were found inside cooking utensils in a mess in the Radha-Krishna Bhawan at the institute. Students said that on October 17 some of them entered the kitchen during the lunch hour and found rats running around.

Many users flocked to the comment section, expressing disgust. “This is basically what you’ll see in almost every Indian hostel mess, canteen, or restaurant. Indian food often gets a bad rep for hygiene. The government should step in with standards to improve public health and boost India’s global image,” a user wrote. “Unfortunately, this is another reason why brilliant students leave India for International opportunities,” another user commented.
“We need to legalise hygiene in this country,” a third user said.
A probe was immediately launched after the video came to light. “Immediate investigation has been started, and corrective action is being taken to ensure compliance with hygiene standards. The health and safety of the students remains the top priority. External special experts have been engaged to assess the situation and prevent such incidents in future,” India Today quoted Sonika Shrivastava, IIT-Roorkee’s media in-charge.
In July, a video of a mouse swimming in chutney reportedly at the hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University at Sultanpur, Hyderabad was widely criticised. The viral clip showed the mouse swimming in a container filled with food.
