Navratri celebrations in Pakistan: viral videos show people in traditional attire performing garba, dandiya in Karachi

Observed over nine nights, the Hindu festival of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms.

As Navratri festivities are underway in India, heartwarming videos from Pakistan are winning hearts on social media. The viral videos capture people enthusiastically participating in garba and dandiya celebrations in the predominantly Muslim country.

One of the videos was shared by Preetam Devria, a Hindu resident of Pakistan, who shared an Instagram reel from a Navratri event showing people dressed in vibrant traditional attire, and playing dandiya and garba. Another video, posted by a user named Dheeraj, shows a similar celebration held in Karachi.

Sharing the video, Devria wrote, “Navratri festival 2025 (Om and Pakistan’s flag emojis).”

The video quickly went viral, sparking a wave of reactions. Numerous users hailed the festive spirit in the neighbouring nation. “Pakistan is for all and all religions are respected and everyone is free to practice their religion without anyone bothering them,” a user wrote. “I am happy to see Hindus enjoying their religious events freely in our beloved Pakistan,” another user commented.

“I hope people celebrate and we unite together and make great nation,” a third user reacted.

Navratri is observed over nine nights and is dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms. The festival, which began on September 22 this year, will last till October 2. Interestingly, this year’s celebration extends for one extra day, as per the Drik Panchang calendar.

The eighth day of the Navratri festival and the second day of Durga Puja is known as Maha Ashtami or Maha Durga Ashtami. The day falls on the bright lunar fortnight Ashtami tithi of the Hindu month of Ashwin, which corresponds to late September and early October.

This year, Durga Ashtami will be observed on Tuesday, September 30. The Ashtami Tithi will begin from September 29 at 04.31 pm and end on September 30 at 06.06 pm, according to drikpanchang.com.
