Among the lakhs of devotees who flocked to Prayagraj Monday to take the holy bath, marking the commencement of the Maha Kumbh Mela, were foreigners. The cold temperatures did not keep the faithful from taking a dip in the icy waters of the Sangam — the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati.
Among them were people from Russia, Brazil, Spain, and South Africa, who have come to take part in the one-and-a-half-month Kumbh Mela. “I practice Yoga and I am searching for Moksha. It’s amazing here, India is the spiritual heart of the world… Water is cold but the heart is filled with warmth,” a Brazilian devotee told news agency ANI after taking a dip.
“I came from Russia. India is a great country. We are here at Kumbh Mela for the first time. Here we can see the real India – the true power lies in the people of India. I am shaking because of the vibe of the people of this holy place. I love India. Mera Bharat Mahaan,” a Russian devotee said.
“It’s well organised. It’s so beautiful. The streets are clean, the people are so friendly and happy,” a devotee from South Africa’s Cape Town said, adding they practice Sanatan Dharma.

“A very special day for crores of people who cherish Bharatiya values and culture! Maha Kumbh 2025 commences in Prayagraj, bringing together countless people in a sacred confluence of faith, devotion and culture. The Maha Kumbh embodies India’s timeless spiritual heritage and celebrates faith and harmony,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also hailed the Maha Kumbh Mela. “Where there is a confluence of cultures, there is also a confluence of faith and harmony. Giving the message of ‘unity in diversity’, Maha Kumbh-2025, Prayagraj is providing an encounter with Sanatan along with the welfare of humanity,” he wrote on X.
