Kerala woman forest officer single-handedly rescues 16-ft king cobra: ‘brave soul’

A video of a forest officer fearlessly rescuing a massive king cobra in Kerala is winning plaudits on social media. Shared by retired forest officer Susanta Nanda, the video features officer G S Roshni from the Paruthipalli Range handling the enormous creature using a snake-catching stick.

The king cobra was spotted in a stream that is frequently used by local residents for bathing. Responding swiftly to the call, Roshni, a member of the Kerala Forest Department’s Rapid Response Team, used the special tool to capture the cobra and later released it in a safe area, away from human habitat.

The viral clip shows her stepping into the stream and handling the snake which was in the water body. As the video progresses, she is seen successfully trapping the snake in a long, black bag.

“My salutations to the green queens & the bravery shown by them in the wild. Beat FO G S Roshni, part of the Rapid Response Team of Kerala FD, rescuing a 16-foot king cobra. This was the 1st time she was tackling a king cobra, though she is credited to have rescued more than 800 snakes,” Nanda wrote.

The video quickly garnered attention as several social media users hailed officer Roshni for her bravery. “Inspirational for future officers those who opt forest services,” a user wrote. “This job is so risky …wishing her best of health and success,” another netizen commented.

“What a brave soul that she is, appreciate the good work,” a third user reacted.

According to PTI, Roshni has rescued hundreds of venomous and non-venomous snakes over her nearly eight-year career with the Kerala Forest Department.
