It was a scene that could have easily been in a movie. In Kerala, a woman’s wedding day saw an unexpected turn when she met with an accident on the morning of the ceremony. Yet, instead of postponing the nuptials, her family and the groom moved quickly to ensure that the sacred muhurtam (auspicious time) was not missed, even if it meant that they had to say their vows inside a hospital’s emergency room.
The unusual wedding unfolded at VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi after Avani, a native of Kommadi in Alappuzha, was injured on her way to get her bridal makeup done, PTI reported. She and V M Sharon from Thumboli were scheduled to get married around noon on Friday.
But things went awry early that morning. While travelling to Kumarakom, the car carrying Avani skidded out of control and crashed into a tree. Locals rushed her to Kottayam Medical College, and after doctors detected a spinal injury, she was shifted to a speciality hospital in Ernakulam around midday. Sharon and his family arrived soon after.
With the auspicious time fixed between 12.15 pm and 12.30 pm, both families wished that the ceremony go ahead as planned. After discussions with the medical team, the hospital agreed and created space in the Emergency Department for the rituals, ensuring “Avani wasn’t put through any additional discomfort,” according to a hospital spokesperson.
Hospital staff quickly prepared the area once they learned that the families were determined to honour the muhurtam. Surrounded by doctors, nurses and a handful of close relatives, Sharon tied the thaali and the couple officially became husband and wife.
Dr Sudheesh Karunakaran, Head of Neuro Surgery at the hospital, later confirmed that Avani had suffered a spinal injury and would be undergoing surgery soon.
