Indian tourists have repeatedly come under scrutiny over a lack of civic sense and public decency, often found littering at tourist spots, both abroad and in the country. With the advent of social media, users have been calling out such behaviour, highlighting the irresponsible behaviour displayed by tourists from India. Now, a video has emerged showing a Portuguese man cleaning trash in Meghalaya, which is often hailed for its clean water bodies and tourist spots.

Shared by a resident, Dappura Chyne, on Instagram, the video shows him expressing disappointment over beer and plastic bottles thrown in a natural pool. As the video progresses, he introduces Bruno, a tourist from Portugal, who dives into the pool and cleans it.

The clip has since gone viral, sparking a backlash against travellers who litter. “Thats truely very sad. When will we learn to be a responsible traveller/tourist,” a user wrote. “It’s so good to see that our state become more n more famous n known as the day pass by the sad reality is that people’s are littering our mother nature,” another user commented.

“This is what happens in Goa when influencers and people put it up on Instagram and attract…indian tourists. We Goans are left to suffer and live in their dump,” a third user reacted. “Northeast was better when inaccessible,” a fourth user said.

In October, a video of a Russian woman schooling a group of Indian children for littering on the streets caught the Internet’s attention. The clip showed children throwing plastic wrappers after the tourist refused to give them money. The incident was also highlighted by Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, on social media.
