The anticipated merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar is set to significantly impact India’s OTT landscape, potentially positioning the combined platform as a dominant force in the industry. However, an unexpected twist has surfaced: a tech-savvy individual from Delhi has already acquired the domain name “JioHotstar,” which could throw a wrench in any plans for a unified platform.

The domain now directs users to a website containing a letter addressed to Reliance Industries (RIL) executives. The Delhi-based app developer, who owns the domain, is offering to relinquish it in exchange for financial support to cover his higher education costs. Specifically, he hopes to enroll at the prestigious Cambridge University and has asked the company to fund his Executive MBA tuition as part of the deal.

The developer, who is currently building a start-up, has revealed in a recent update on the domain that he requested £93,345 from Reliance, matching the fees for his Cambridge programme. However, this request was turned down by Ambujesh Yadav, AVP of Commercials at Reliance. According to reports, Yadav rejected the proposal and hinted at possible legal action against the domain holder.

“I don’t have the power to stand against Reliance. I might automatically lose access of this domain in few hours. If any legal professional could help, I would be grateful,” he wrote in an update on the domain.

Now the screenshots of the domain are going viral on X.

Many users came in support of the Delhi techie and expressed their views on Reliance supporting his education. One user wrote, “Could actually be a very nice PR for @RIL_Updates @reliancejio and especially @ril_foundation if they can sponsor the kid’s education. He is smart, and made a smart pre-emptive move. If the Ambanis can splurge crores on marriages and donations, this is peanuts. Will be inspiring.”

Another user wrote,” Not gonna lie this is a really smart move and I’m pretty sure that £93,345 ain’t going waste.” A third individual commented, “I hope some lawyer comes forward and represents him.”
