The national capital region woke up early on Monday with a 4.0 earthquake, the National Centre for Seismology said. Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and its surrounding areas at 5:36 AM, the epicenter being the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan.
According to the NCS, it originated just 5 km below the Earth’s surface, which tends to cause more damage than tremors originating deep below the surface. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the earthquake, urging people to follow the necessary precautions and stay calm.
“Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” PM Modi wrote on X.

In recent years, the region has witnessed multiple earthquakes of magnitude 4. In 2022, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck Haryana, a neighboring state of Delhi. It was a shallow quake, though it caused no damage. According to the US Geological Survey, Delhi has not experienced an earthquake above magnitude 5 in the past decade.
