Torrential rain impacted parts of Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday, leading to significant waterlogging and some casualties. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert (be prepared) for urban and rural areas of Bengaluru. Meanwhile, several videos showcasing the destruction surfaced on social media.

In a viral video, numerous vehicles are seen submerged in neck-deep water at an apartment complex near Yelahnka Lake, completely halting movement for residents. As the video continues, the ground of the building can be seen flooded.

“Yelahanka Lake is reminding Kendriya Vihar that apartment is on its land. After last night’s torrential rains, today’s scene. Time to demolish it and reclaim the lake property. Whoever has built it has to pay compensation to house owners,” an X user wrote.

With over 87,000 views, the video amassed a sea of reactions. “It’s a cooperative built for ex central government employees. State government would have identified and allocated the land,” a user wrote. “This apartment in Yelahanka was built by the central government’s PWD. Modi should step in and make alternative arrangements for our ex-servicemen,” another user commented.

“Heartbreaking… Cities are drowning under poor planning. Urgent action needed!” a third user reacted.

Meanwhile, a brother-sister duo drowned in Bengaluru’s Kengeri lake evening while attempting to fetch lotus flowers. The rescue personnel on Tuesday recovered the body of John Srinivas, 13, while a search was going on to find her sister Lakshmi, 11. They were residents of Kengeri and children of Nagamma, who works as a sanitation worker with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, was likely to continue in Bengaluru until October 24, prompting the IMD to issue a yellow alert (be aware) on Tuesday.
