Uthradam, the day before Thiruvonam, is being celebrated on Saturday. Onam sadya, the traditional festive feast of Kerala, once limited to Malayali households, has become mainstream and a lot more accessible to everyone.

Tarun S Mehta, CEO of electric scooter company Ather Energy, shared three photos of the Onam celebrations at his office, and two of the photos showed a chapatti being served as part of the feast.

Now, a decent sadya will offer over a dozen dishes and an authentic sadya will have over 26 items served. However, chapatti is not a part of it.

Many Malayalis on X responded to Mehta’s ‘North Indian’ Onam sadya post pointing out that chapatti is not acceptable as part of the sadya. Some users were also of the opinion that the number of dishes were less.

One Malayali said, “Poverty ridden onam Sadiya – there should be at least 28 dishes, also chapati shouldn’t be there.” Another user commented, “This is a random meal served on a leaf. Invoking the powers vested in me, I disqualify this as a Sadya!”

Another Malayali X user wrote, “This is NOT Onam sadhya. It’s ok, you enjoyed eating something on the banana leaf, good for you guys. But don’t call it sadhya”

In other news, as Kerala prepares for grand sadya on Sunday (September 15), industrial demand for pappadam has soared — sadya is incomplete without this salty treat, crushed and mixed into sambar and rice, and into payasam and banana.
