Entrepreneur and Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal, who also appears as one of the investors on the business reality show Shark Tank India, recently shared investment advice for people in their late 20s and early 30s, emphasising that the wisdom of elders still holds and should not be overlooked.
In a special interview with Pinkvilla, Mittal gave viewers a tour of his office and spoke about the early days of his journey in the United States, where he had once ordered a Ferrari from the profits of his business but later had to cancel it. He also shared how his mother affectionately calls him “Dheet” (stubborn). Mittal also shed light on his investment advice.
When asked about investing advise he would give for beginners, and which sector he would recommend, Mittal said, “Har sawaal ke liye mere paas do shabd ka jawaab hai, it depends” (For every question, my two-word answer is: it depends). He later explained, “If you are in your 20s or early 30s, what people don’t understand is that the trick to making real wealth is compounding. The human brain doesn’t understand compounding very well, and therefore we look for quick-rich schemes, which is a disaster.”
“If you compound and invest in the Indian stock market continuously over 20 years through SIPs (Systematic Investment Plans), you can turn Rs 100 crores or $10–20 million, you can become a billionaire in your lifetime without picking individual stocks, not doing exotic investing, but simply buying the Indian index over the next 30 years,” Mittal adds. He later calls compounding “magical.”
When asked if gold and silver are good investment opportunities, Mittal shared a cheeky anecdote: when his father-in-law suggested his wife buy gold, Mittal said, “Maine bohot sunaaya tha uss time ki gold se kuch return nahi banega, kuch compounding nahi banegi, but woh 3–4x ho gaya hai, toh main kis mei se bolun ki don’t invest in gold” (I had told them back then that gold won’t give much return, there’s no compounding, but it went 3–4x, so how can I say don’t invest in gold).
“Gold is always a good idea,” Mittal says later. He adds, “Jo humare ancestors kehte the ki sona khareedo, ghar khareedo, uss mein bohot wisdom hai” (What our ancestors used to say–to buy gold, to buy a house–there’s a lot of wisdom in that). He further suggests, “Jab paise ho, buy a primary home” (When you have money, buy a primary home).
Mittal also called out the finfluencers, social media content creators on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, who advise against buying houses and suggest renting instead while investing elsewhere. Mittal says, “Agar ek baar chat aa gayi na toh aadmi aur risk le sakta hai” (Once you have a roof over your head, you can take on more risk).
