Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal caused a stir with his call for applications for a Chief of Staff role. In his post calling for applicants, Goyal said the chosen candidate will be expected to pay a whopping Rs 20 lakh since the role is as good as getting an MBA.

Anupam Mittal, Shaadi.com founder and a shark on Shark Tank India, took a dig at Goyal in a lengthy LinkedIn post. In his post, Mittal invited people to apply for a “Chief of What?” role only if they cannot pay “his friend Deepi Rs 20 lakh.”

“All those who can’t afford to pay my friend Deepi 20 lacs, please send me your application. I am looking for a Chief of Staff too although I don’t know exactly what one does, I figure it can be your first assignment. I want you but you must be willing to do the following,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

Mittal also shared five requirements for the role. “I want you but you must be willing to do the following,” he wrote. He mentioned that the suitable candidate must accept compensation, send a resume, go through HR and carry the title of “Chief of What” for six months.”

On Wednesday, Goyal shared an announcement explaining that the Chief of Staff will play a central role in shaping Zomato’s future, working on major initiatives like Blinkit, District, Hyperpure, and Feeding India.

Goyal, a couple of days after he posted the call for applicants, shared an update that the process has been closed, and that Zomato received over 18,000 applications for the role.

“We will go through these applications over the next week, and reach out to the people who we think are the right fit for an organisation, We want to build a learning organisation, and we now know thousands of people who exhibit their hunger for learning and constant improvement, over short term constraints and their current reality in life,” the post read.

The post also stressed that the company would reject applications “who have the money, or even talked about the money,” clarifying Zomato never intended to take money from the chosen candidate or make them work for free.
