Many people consider the Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree lighting, a holiday tradition in New York City, to be the official start of the holiday season. The tree lighting ceremony is a spectacular event, drawing crowds to witness the illumination.
This year, 50,000 colourful lights illuminated the famous tree on Wednesday night. For the second consecutive year, Kelly Clarkson hosted the festive “Christmas in Rockefeller Centre” special that ended with the much-anticipated tree lighting ceremony. The event brought together a star-studded lineup of performers, including the Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Hudson, Thalia, Raye, and more.
This year’s tree, a majestic Norway spruce, stands tall at 74 feet and stretches 43 feet wide. According to AP, it comes from the small town of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and weighs around 11 tonnes. Estimated to be about 70 years old, the tree is crowned with a Swarovski star featuring stunning three million crystals.
The grand tree, perched above the famous ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, will be on display until mid-January. On Christmas Day, it will shine brightly for a full 24 hours.
The official X account of Rockefeller Centre posted, “The 2024 Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree is officially sparkling on Centre Plaza.”
