The timeless love story of Salim and Anarkali, immortalised in Indian cinema through Mughal-e-Azam, continues to captivate audiences even today. K Asif’s masterpiece brought this tale of forbidden romance to life, blending history with legend in a way that remains unforgettable.

Now, across the border, in Pakistan, a group of students from Government College University (GCU), Lahore, has paid tribute to this iconic film by recreating the legendary Pyaar kiya toh darna kya sequence in which Anarkali—originally portrayed by Madhubala—fearlessly proclaims her love for Prince Salim before Emperor Akbar through an emotionally-charged dance performance. A short clip showing the students’s rendition was shared by Ajwa Ashfaq on Instagram.

Staged by the university’s Dramatics Club as part of their annual play, Anarkali, the performance beautifully revived the grandeur and magic of the 60s classic, leaving netizens mesmerised.

The video has gone viral and is about to be viewed by more than a million viewers. Enthralled by the performance, social media users have filled the comments section with praise and appreciation.

A user commented, “Whenever I see this clip literally I get goosebumps.” Another user wrote, “The Beauty and craze of Mughle azam is so unexplainable.”

A third user wrote, “Bro after watching jodha Akhbar on zee.” A fourth person commented, “Recreating the past is wonderful but if you observe in real-time Madhubala ji and Dilip Kumar had a high-intensity love affair. It failed for many reasons. However, the tragic end in the movie and in the real life of madhubala. My heart bleeds for that iconic actress. May her soul find rest in the eternal world.”

Madhubala’s portrayal in Pyaar kiya toh darna kya remains an unforgettable highlight of Indian cinema. With Lata Mangeshkar’s soulful voice and Naushad’s masterful composition, the song became iconic. What made it even more striking was its vibrant technicolor visuals, a rare contrast in a film predominantly shot in black and white.
