Telegram CEO Pavel Durov recently shared his insights on which subject best prepares students for the challenges of the future. For Durov, it is mathematics.

In a recent post on X, Durov advised students to prioritise mathematics, highlighting its role in developing independent and logical thinking. “If you’re a student choosing what to focus on, pick mathematics. It will teach you to rely on your own brain, think logically, break down problems, and solve them step by step in the right order. That’s the core skill you’ll need to build companies and manage projects,” he wrote.

The post quickly gained traction, racking up over a million views and numerous reposts. But not everyone agreed with Durov’s view. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, wrote, “Physics (with math).” Musk, who studied both physics and economics, has long emphasised the value of physics as a framework for understanding complex systems and addressing real-world problems.

Durov later responded Musk’s perspective, responding, “+1. If you’re already strong in math, it’s worth exploring physics and computer science – both are excellent ways to apply math in the real world, sharpen your logical and critical thinking, and solve important problems.”

Several others reacted to the Durvo and Musk’s conversation, with a user commenting, “To build companies, logical thinking alone isn’t enough. You also need intuition, boldness, and the ability to understand people. And sadly, none of that is taught in any linear algebra textbook.” Another user wrote, “Physics is the ultimate knowledge, it will teach you even how to access truth. Math is the language of expression of any subject. So whether economics or physics you have to pick a subject to learn math.”

“Math major here. As much as I loved math, I think it’s not good as a primary focus. Same for software. A science or engineering that actually uses math, such as physics or biology, is much better,” a third user reacted.
