10 most valuable unicorn companies in 2024: A “unicorn” is referred to as a privately held startup company with a valuation of over $1 billion. This term, coined by American venture capitalist Aileen Lee in 2013, reflects the exceptional rarity of such successful enterprises and the unique combination of factors required for them to achieve such high valuations.
According to Hurun Research, there are currently 1,453 unicorns in 53 countries and 291 cities globally. Some of the most prominent former unicorns include household names such as Airbnb, Facebook, and Google.
India hosts two of the most valuable unicorns, namely the food delivery platform Swiggy and the fantasy sports-focused company Dream11, each valued at an impressive $8 billion, according to Hurun’s 2024 Unicorn Index.
Notably, last year, the Indian e-grocery delivery app—Zepto—raised $200 million in fresh funding at a valuation of $1.4 billion, making it the first startup in the country to cross the billion-dollar valuation mark in nearly a year.
Unsurprisingly, the San Francisco Bay Area, home to Silicon Valley, remains the world’s leading hub for unicorn startups, with the United States being home to six of the world’s top 10 most valuable unicorn companies.
Following the United States, Singapore and India are emerging as the fastest-growing high-value unicorn startups. Interestingly, China’s ByteDance, the social media and entertainment business that owns the social media platform TikTok, is the world’s most valued unicorn, at $225 billion.
Followed by the United States, its largest unicorn company—SpaceX, founded and led by Elon Musk, with a valuation of $150 billion—is the only company in the aerospace category to make it to the top of the list.
