Google celebrates MF Husain’s 100th birth anniversary with abstract doodle

Husain, often known as India's Picasso, was born in Maharashtra before the country gained independence.

Internet search giant Google on Thursday celebrated Indian-born painter Maqbool Fida Husain’s 100th birth anniversary with a colourful doodle on its homepage.

The doodle pays obeisance to Husain with an abstract art design showing the letters G,O,O,E as circles and the artist’s right arm and paint brush completing the word Google.

Husain, often known as India’s Picasso, was born in Maharashtra before the country gained independence. Husain is celebrated for his series of paintings on the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and, at the same time, has courted controversy over his depiction of Hindu deities before his self-imposed exile in 2006. His paintings were diverse in nature and often carried motifs of urban and rural India. Bollywood star and Husain’s muse Madhuri Dixit was a source of inspiration for many of his paintings.

Husain also wrote and directed films during his time. He directed ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of Three cities’ starring Tabu, which was screened at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. It is a story of a Hyderabad-based writer suffering from writer’s block.

Husain surrendered his Indian passport and became a Qatar national before he died at the age of 95 in a London hospital.
