Xiaomi started its journey with smartphones in India and then pivoted to other smart products. One such product is the smart air purifier, and the company recently launched the latest iteration at its Smarter Living event along with a slew of other products.
The newest Smart Air Purifier 4 from Xiaomi claims to offer clean and breathable air at an affordable price when compared to the competition with a price tag of Rs 13,999. I have been using the Smart Air Purifier 4 at my home, and here is what I feel about the latest smart air purifier in the market.
Right out of the box, the Smart Air Purifier 4 looks just like its predecessor. However, the latest entrant has plenty of new design changes, which make it easier to use and also easy to service.
The white polka-dot-like design is not just for looks; these vents actually intake the surrounding air and the fresh air comes out from the top. The improved design allows the air purifier to intake air from 360 degrees; hence, the filter will be used uniformly.
The newer model also makes it easy to open and clean the fan area with just a single screw, and the smaller grills ensure that it is a child-safe air purifier. Meanwhile, the monochrome touch-enabled OLED screen is now slightly larger, which makes it easy to access, and one can change modes using the same. The display also shows the remaining percentage of the filter, and there is also an LED light bar, which turns red (bad), orange (average), or green (good), depending on the air quality.
The display also shows the humidity percentage, the current temperature, and the real-time air quality index (AQI) of your home.
Lastly, it comes with a detachable power cord, which makes it easy to carry around. I also liked the fact that if you open the back panel to access the filter when the purifier is running, it will automatically turn the device off.
As the name suggests, this is a smart air purifier, and it connects to your WiFi and can be controlled remotely from your phone via the Mi Home app. This is a useful feature for those who might want to turn on the purifier while they are back from the office, and this will also allow users to turn it off from a remote location to save electricity.
This is the first air purifier that I have used, and I would say that it works as expected. With an AQI of less than 50 (in Bengaluru), I was glad that I don’t live in an air-hazardous area. On top of that, the purifier would further bring down the AQI to less than 10 (2.5 ppm) in less than 20 minutes.
As soon as I cook (once in a while), the air quality rapidly deteriorates, but the air purifier does neutralize it in no time. This could vary from home to home (considering the size of the place).
It’s summer now, and I even used it like a table fan. It did blow a cool breeze like a table fan. Even after using this purifier for over 15 days (5-6 hours a day), the filter health was still at 99%, and it should last for at least a year, at least in those locations where the AQI isn’t that severe.
Note that it uses a new HEFA filter and as of now, there is no information about the pricing of the same.
While it operates silently in low and night mode, it does get fairly loud in high and manual mode, similar to an air cooler. If you don’t want to toggle around the settings at all times, you can also set it to automatic mode and forget about it, and the device will manually change the mode based on the surrounding air quality.
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 can be a good investment for those who suffer from bad air quality in their homes. I, for one, never thought I would need an air purifier until I started testing this one. Besides filtering out dust particles, it can also filter pollens, and the built-in negative air ioniser could also come in handy for those who suffer from respiratory-related allergies (can also be turned off). Overall, a good-grade smart air purifier from Xiaomi delivers on all the company’s claims.
