Is Oppo F31 Pro+ a device that stands out for its multi-taskers and movie buffs?

The mid-segment smartphone market is crowded, with manufacturers vying to differentiate their devices. Oppo’s F31 Pro+ stands out with its eye-catching design and unique colour tones, like the prismatic midnight blue. While it doesn’t outshine every competitor, it carves its own niche.

I have been using the F31 Pro+ for a while, and it does have features that make it unique from other smartphones and put a fresh perspective out there. While it does feature all aspects of a good mid-segment, everything can’t be perfect. With more insight and more perspective, I have not been able to understand why such a smartphone could have such flagship killer features yet lack some basic attributes.

Design and Display

The phone has a huge screen! I say it with an exclamation because I find it oddly huge and appealing. The bezels of the smartphone are smoother, and so are the edges of the phone. I find it very surprising; the black glass of the device is aesthetically pleasing, and the prismatic midnight blue is a conversation starter. From a distance, the phone seems to have a darker colour, but as you approach or reflect some light on it, the blue hits the eye and unexpectedly catches it.

The display is phenomenal. I would like to consider myself a cinephile, and I keep looking for a device to watch movies and clips, and I would like to attest that this is it. I watched a few movies and played a few games, and I was really impressed with the quality. The 6.8-inch AMOLED display really is great for viewing. I even went for a day out with the device in Delhi’s scorching heat, yet I could clearly see the screen under direct sunlight.

Everything about the design of the device seems to strike a thought, but for a person like me who likes to keep his devices clean (not my room, sorry, Mom), the phone is a ‘FINGERPRINT MAGNET’. I am a little irritated with the fact that I am constantly wiping off fingerprint marks on the device. The back glass of the device is matte, and I think they should learn a bit or two from their cousin, OnePlus, on how to look clean.

Battery

The device features a whopping 7,000mAh battery, and coming from an Apple user, this is a dream. I ran almost two whole days without charging the device, and it still had some juice left. For me, that’s impressive and astonishing, because I do have a slight addiction to new gadgets and always hope to use them till the battery drains. I streamed a series the entire day, and ran for work the next morning, somehow the phone still had 12 per cent of battery left.

And the 80W charger really fills up the gas tank faster than expected; in under 90 minutes, the phone is fully charged and ready to last two days again. And as someone who is glued to their phone, I need not worry about running out of battery.

Performance

The phone features a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, while the other phones in the same price range feature a better chipset, like the Poco F7, which offers a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This chipset is not bothersome, but I think with time, they should upgrade their hardware as the predecessors did.

I have been going hard and heavy on the chipset to see if it overheats and test the thermal, and let’s just say that I was pleased with my findings. I like to believe that I am a serious gamer, but sometimes I like to play some games to just blow off some steam and have fun. And that’s what I have been doing; I played a few games on the highest setting possible, and the device performed well. It didn’t heat up and remained calm like Yoda. When it comes to using it in the real world, it is a decent phone for multitasking, taking calls, attending meetings and watching movies.

What also really startled me were the speakers. I have owned a fair share of Android and Apple devices and I always felt that they lack volume. Usually, when I am watching a movie on my iPhone, I always connect my Bluetooth speaker to have the desired sound levels. But this time I didn’t need it; I enjoyed the movie with ample sound levels.

They also marketed that the phone has an S1 network booster chip, and honestly speaking, I think it didn’t make a significant difference. While being in the lift, I still couldn’t hear my friends cursing me on the call.

Camera

The F31 Pro+ comes with a 50MP OIS main sensor and a 2MP monochrome camera, plus a 32MP front camera. And lacks a telephoto or an ultrawide sensor. While I was taken aback that at Rs 32,999, the smartphone has just a single camera, monochrome doesn’t play a huge role. I am also a photography aficionado and in my opinion, colours make a huge impact on the photo, be it a black and white or a normal colour picture. I think their biggest flaw is their camera, a 50MP camera, but with no hue or vibrance, the photos lack an important ingredient for a good segment-killer phone.

Night photography is not that adequate and detailed, and is very pixelated and colourless. As for the influencer, the front camera does a mediocre job and gets the work done. The only decently impressive factor seemed to be the image stabilisation.

Last words

The Oppo F31 Pro+ packs a decent amount of features for the price it is currently being sold at. This is a very apt phone for people who are looking to multitask and need a long-lasting battery. The huge display also entertains the user throughout the day and shows off its unique back glass. If you are considering buying a mid-segment device under Rs 35,000, this is the right device to go for. Other alternatives to the devices could be Nothing 3(a), Poco F7, and IQoo Neo 10R.
