WhatsApp is known to heavily compress images when you send them across and people resultantly tend to use other platforms to transfer full-size images, especially if they are taken with a high-resolution camera or have a lot of details. Others send the image as a document if they’re aware of the workaround.
But with a new update, the messaging platform has now officially done away with this shortcoming. WhatsApp’s latest version adds a new option to send images in ‘HD’ resolution, with a promise of support for HD videos on the way.
To access the feature, you’ll have to first update WhatsApp to the latest release. Next, follow the steps given below.
1. Open WhatsApp and select a chat where you want to send an HD photo. Tap on the attachment icon (the paperclip) and select the image you wish to send.
2. On the photo-sharing screen, you will see a new HD button at the top next to the other image editing tools like rotate and crop. Tap on the HD button to access the photo quality options.
3. By default, Standard Quality is selected. This means that WhatsApp will compress your photo to reduce its file size and make it easier to send and receive.
4. If you want to send your photo in HD quality, tap on HD Quality instead. This will preserve the original resolution and quality of your photo.
5. Hit send.
Meanwhile, if you receive an HD photo, you’ll see an HD label in the bottom-left corner of the photo to indicate so. If you have a low bandwidth connection and wish to save data, you can choose the quality on a photo-by-photo basis.
