The fourth season of the Women’s Premier League’s (WPL) will be shaped by the upcoming WPL mega auction this Thursday with all the five franchises looking to bolster their squads. A total of 277 players are in the auction pool, fighting for the 73 available slots at the auction set to take place in New Delhi.
The WPL auction list has 194 Indian players in the fray. This comprises 52 capped and 142 uncapped players, who will go under the hammer for 50 slots, while 66 overseas capped players and 17 overseas uncapped players will look to fill the 23 available slots.
Former India cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy heaped praise on Deepti Sharma’s skills and explained why she will be the most in-demand player in the WPL mega auction.
“Deepti Sharma is a proven match-winner from earlier WPL seasons, performing brilliantly with both bat and ball. She also won the Player of the Tournament award in the recently concluded Women’s ODI World Cup. Her demand will definitely be high in the mega-auction, and every franchise will be watching her closely,” she said in a show for JioHotstar.
Former India star Anjum Chopra also shared her opinion on the teams who will be keen to sign Deepti Sharma in the upcoming WPL mega auction.
“Gujarat Giants should definitely consider Deepti Sharma in the mega-auction. Delhi Capitals might also target her as an Indian player who strengthens both batting and bowling. UP Warriorz could be the third team interested after Gujarat and Delhi in acquiring her services,” Chopra said.
A total of 19 players have registered in the highest base-price bracket of Rs 50 lakh, 11 players in the Rs 40 lakh bracket, and 88 players in the Rs 30 lakh bracket.
The UP Warriorz franchise will enter the WPL mega auction with the largest kitty of funds available: Rs 14.5 crore. They also have the most number fo Right To Match (RTM) cards available. Gujarat Giants have a pool of Rs 9 crore available with three RTMs with them. Royal Challengers Bengaluru come next with Rs 6.15 crore available and one RTM card to use. Both Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have Rs 5.7 crore available but no RTM cards to use as they have retained the maximum number of players–three Indians and two overseas players each.
