MI vs KKR Highlights, IPL 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians by 24 runs

Russell is done for the day. What a day KKR has been having tactically everything the have done so far in this game bore fruits. They took a massive risk early in the game by using that substitute however, Russell answered the call and delivered four overs in the second innings.

This is petering out for Mumbai Indians. The dew they have been waiting for just did not come. Apart from Surya none of the batters looked comfortable against slower balls. David is struggling to deal with every ball at this point. This is turning bad to worse for Mumbai Indians.

Andre Russell once again picks a big wicket at the crucial juncture of the game he has been doing throughout the tournament and it has been Surya this time. The ball was there to hit but it took the edge and flew in the air and keeper Salt running back took a brilliant catch.

Varun has bowled out here. It was a decent final over from both side's perspectives as neither did MI lose a wicket nor did the over go for many runs. David is also looking good at the moment KKR needs to break this partnership right here and now.

Well, we might still have a game on folks. Surya extracted 20 runs of the last over pulling back the run rate to 10. The Mumbai veteran is slowly getting into his groove but he needs support from the other end. This is slowing turning into a humdinger here in Wankhede.

Andrew Asman: At the press meet after the T20 World Cup squad announcement, Rohit Sharma exuded confidence. He took on all the questions with a disarming smile and often replied in his witty Bambaiya tone. But that confidence is lacking when it comes to action. Rohit Sharmas's last 4 scores in the IPL read 6, 8, 4, 11 and two of them have come after the team announcement. It paints a dull picture of the 37-year-old's batting form, a month out from the World Cup in USA and West Indies. On Friday, he tried to pull Sunil Narine towards the leg side but ended up skiing it to the midwicket, falling for a 11-ball 12. In a must-win match for the Mumbai Indians, the designated India captain for the World Cup left his team in a spot of bother with 46/3 on the board just as the powerplay got over.

While Mumbai has lost quite a few games this season this has to be their worst batting performance. Hardik would have been cautiously optimistic ahead of the tournament but it is turning into a nightmare for him as a player and as a captain. Trying to play a ball on the leg side of Russell the ball took the leading edge and flew in the air.

Narine changes ends and Wadhera who looked uncomfortable through that over eventually was put out of his misery by the mystery spinner. Tried to cut a ball that was not short enough Wadhera dragged the ball back onto the stumps. 

Andre Russell has taken the ball and remember KKR has to make up their fifth bowler with the likes of Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, and Ramandeep. As we update Russell has slipped down and fallen off the final ball and KKR Physio has walked in to check him.

Well, another one falls for Mumbai this time it is Tilak who tries to drive the ball through covers got the edge straight to the third man inside the ring. This is getting bad to ugly quite quickly for Mumbai Indians here. They are digging themselves into a hole.

Spin from both ends now by KKR. This is the passage of play where Mumbai need to be a bit cautious. While there was an expectation of dew from Hardik at the toss nothing can be seen on the ground. Plenty depends on how Surya bats from here for MI.

Narine has been brought into the attack and Rohit tried to pull the ball on the leg-side and got the toe end and mid-wicket took a backwards running catch. Mumbai has now got itself into a bit of a pickle here. The ball is still stopping a bit.

Naman Dhir looked uncomfortable throughout that innings and then charged down Varun on the first ball for some reason and got bowled. Surya has walked into the middle. Things are going at a bit of a sedate pace here.

Rohit played a sublime shot over extra cover for six for all the talk of swing in the previous update folks now it stopped moving and KKR has now turned to spin. Interestingly they have given him the end which has not gripped in the first innings and he picks a wicket as we update.

Naman Dhir has walked into the middle and he is walking across the stumps and playing everything through the leg-side. The ball is still swinging. This is interesting this is probably the first time in the tournament two days in a row the ball has swung for this long. 

Well, Starc took the second over and he swung back a couple to Kishan. The left-hander did hit a couple for a boundary however, one of the deliveries straightened up and took the leg-stump. The ball is swinging at this point it will be interesting how Mumbai plays out this period.

Vaibhav Arora has taken the new ball for KKR and the towels are already. There is a lot of dew and it will be a challenge for KKR in the second innings. This should be a walk in the park for Mumbai Indians here unless KKR delivers some dramatic bowling performance tonight.

The wicket was a bit stopping at the start, it’s a fresh wicket so it was a bit sticky, but no matter how it plays you have to bowl well. The way we bowled today it was really great to see. Well, at the end of the day, it totally depends on what the team requires, that time Hardik came and bowled a really good over. It looks like there is a bit of dew out there and it will play a little better.

Vinayakk: Not for the first time in this IPL, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a special yorker. Or two. First, to a fellow yorker specialist. If he wasn't at the receiving end, Mitch Starc would have enjoyed that as a fellow fast bowler. Going around the wicket, Bumrah nailed one to the base of the crease that left Starc flummoxed and the ball crashed into the stumps. In the final over, it was Venkatesh Iyer's turn. The left-hander premeditated a wide yorker and moved over outside the offstump. But Bumrah's radar was not going to be deceived. Another absolute heat-seeking missile followed, zoning into the base of the middle stump. Venkatesh was on the floor, as was the middle stump. And so Bumrah in overs 18 and 20 combined today went for: 3 wickets, 4 runs, 6 dot balls. Just Jassi things once again.

Vinayakk: KKR are usually very clear about using Andre Russell as a specialist backend batter, managing his entry point to make sure he is around to tonk the big ones at the death overs. It is why they opted to use Manish Pandey as the Impact Player after losing five wickets rather early. Pandey did a good job of arresting the slide with Venkatesh Iyer but perhaps the rebuilding went on for a bit too long for KKR's own benefits. The camera kept panning to him in the dugout as he waited for his chance, that would eventually come in the 17th over when Pandey finally was dismissed. And duly, DreRuss smashed a first-ball six as Hardik Pandya erred with his bouncer. However, while KKR were trying to minimise the damage mid-innings, Russell's impact was also minimised as Venkatesh sold him down the river. A massive mix-up resulted in both batters almost at the same end, and Venkatesh didn't run. Hardik still had a lot of work to do to gather the throw but he did, and Russell had to run all the way back up the Wankhede stairs, showing his frustration at the dismissal as he made his way to the dressing room.

Well, that's why many times in the season earlier there were questions on how and when Bumrah needs to be used and today was a classic example of why MI prefer to use Bumrah the way they do. All the momentum which was built during Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey's partnership was sucked out by Bumrah's three wickets at the end.

Venkatesh Iyer has played a blinder of an inning here. While the wickets have been falling at one end he still held his end up and at the same time was able to manage the strike rate as well. All the timely tactic used by KKR to use Pandey seems to be for nothing now.

Well, well Bumrah comes and Bumrah does what he does. Picks a couple of wickets first it was Ramandeep who plays a ramp shot and then he bowls a yorker to dismiss Mitchell Starc. The innings started poorly for KKR and is ending poorly for KKR here. 

Hardik Pandya first picked the wicket of Manish Pandey and off the final ball of his spell Venkatesh Iyer played a reverse sweep which went straight to the third man inside the ring Russell almost ran to the other end while Iyer was ball-watching both batters were stuck at one end in the end it was Russell who sacrificed his wicket.

Thushara has been brought back into the attack and he did deliver a decent over. Looks like Mumbai is going to use slower ones on this one to choke the KKR batters with four overs remaining it might be perfect for KKR to get on the charge as there are still two hitters left.

We have reached the second strategic time out here the game is nicely balanced now. This has been an excellent partnership from Kolkata's perspective with two wickets still in the hut they might come all guns blazing in the remainder of five overs. 

Bumrah has been brought back into the attack and Manish Pandey played a lovely ramp over third man. Slowly but steadily Pandey is playing a nice cameo here. Mumbai Indians need to chip in with a couple of wickets or else all the good work done at the start might become undone.

Hardik has brought himself into the attack and delivered a good over. He kept bowling the slower ones making it difficult for the batters to hit them. Meanwhile, Manish Pandey and Venkat Iyer completed a 50-run stand here.

Hardik has turned now to Coetzee who bowled an expensive over. This is where Mumbai needs to be careful and not let Kolkata build a partnership. Hardik still has three overs of Bumrah left and will be interesting to see when Hardik will use them.

There has been certainly a different approach from Kolkata since the strategic break the batters are looking to hit their shots through the line rather than going against the turn. This might bore fruits for KKR going into the second half of this innings. 

Spinners have been able to tighten things in the middle overs for Mumbai here. This is the first time in the tournament the bowling attack has delivered to its capability. It will be interesting to see how KKR will play this innings from here on. 

This has been a good start from Mumbai Piyush Chawla just found the right length on the surface where it is stopping a bit and bowling there continuously. Manish Pandey at this point is using all his experience and playing them with soft hands. If KKR can get to 170 with the spinners their side will be handful on this wicket.

One of the ends is clearly slower than the other one and KKR batters are not adjusting to the pace and just chipping the balls time and again. Manish Pandey has been used as a substitute already by KKR with 13 overs remaining in the innings

Naman Dhir has been brought into the attack after Powerplay and he did deliver a decent over. It is a good powerplay for Mumbai Indians this. They have picked four wickets now the onus is on spinners to keep the lid on run rate in middle overs. As we update Rinku Singh departed.

Hardik Pandya has brought himself into attack and picked up Sunil Narine. The batter tried to swipe the ball on the leg-side and missed it completely. Now it is the fourth wicket that has fallen from that end. KKR need to build a partnership here. 

Coetzee has been brought into the attack. This is the first time in the tournament Mumbai Indians pace attack which is one of the fiercest on paper is starting  to deliver on-field. As we update Hardik Pandya has brought himself into the attack.

That is a stunning over from Tushara it was batters who played a couple of nothing shots. It was Raghuvanshi who chipped one straight to cover and then Iyer who flicked one straight to mid-on. The wicket seems to be stopping a bit at this point in time.

Jasprit Bumrah has taken the new ball from the other end as expected he bowled a brilliant over. Most importantly he kept Narine guessing throughout the over. The only boundary of the over came off the inside edge of Raghuvanshi. 

Tushara's first over had everything in it a couple of boundaries a few ariel shots from Phil Salt and he got out as well trying to play another one. Then Raghuvanshi came in and played a stylish flick on the leg-side for a boundary. 

The crowd is buzzing in Wankhede the umpires are walking to a loud cheer from the crowd both Phil Salt and Sunil Narine have walked into the middle and they are enjoying the conditions here. The wicket looks excellent for batting today once again.

Feeling good, based on the preperation, I am feeling like every other game before. Everyone is ready, we know that it’s going to be a tough game tonight so ready for the challenge. I’m always ready to bowl, based on the amount of option the skipper has, that’s the reason why I may not bowl my 4 but if it’s 1 or 2 overs, I’m ready to give it my best shot. We have a lot of options in our team, so can’t complain, whoever gets the responsibility should get the job done, once they are getting the job done, happy days. I really enjoy, I have a lot of good memories here, a lot of good innings here, so I hope I can refresh my memory with a good one tonight.

It's always about doing the small things well, obviously the dew is a factor but we have to keep that out of mind. The message is clear, each one of them knows their role and responsibility. Batting first we are going with the same team.

We will bowl. It's always about playing for pride, it looks quite tough for us but at the same time, we want to play good cricket. Looks like a good track, it's a fresh wicket so thought that bowling first will be good. Only one change, Naman Dhir comes in place of Nabi.

Let’s reflect on the boundary sizes first – to my right it's 60m and to my left, it’s 65m, down the ground it's 74m. I think you got two different games from two different ends, if you look at this end it is quite dry than what we have come to expect, still there is plenty of runs to be had, I think captains will utilise spin bowling down into this because it’s quite dry and it might grip. But, if we continue to walk up this pitch, we can see that the grass covering is a lot more even so the fast bowlers might get more pace and bite bowling from this end up here. So, from a batting perspective, you have to see which overs you are going to capitalize on, whom you are going to attack. I spoke to the groundsman and they are expecting some dew tonight so the toss is important. The average first innings score here in the four match this season is 190. It’s not humid, there is no breeze around so I still think these are good batting conditions and I feel 190 is going to be below-par on this pitch, reckon Michael Clarke and Darren Ganga, in their pitch report.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be looking to inch closer to the playoffs with another victory when they will lock horns against a struggling Mumbai Indians at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.

Starc himself knows he doesn’t have a killer slower ball. Hence, he uses them sparsely. So far, he has bowled only five. Five rather good ones, where batsmen could manage only a run and leg-bye. The reluctance perhaps stems from the knowledge that he has not quite mastered the ball, as proficiently as his yorker or nip-backer. Perhaps, as the tournament rolls along, you could see him sprinkle it more generously.

But it robs him off another dimension. Until then, he would be predictable to deal with, especially at the death. It’s humanly impossible to bowl the perfect yorker every ball. Besides, good adventurous batsmen scoop and steer even toe-crushers to the fence. He can’t be bowling length, hard length or bouncers all the time. Batsmen would merrily second-guess him. Perhaps, the code to ending his IPL struggles to polish his slower ball, one that the patron saints of fast bowlers speak in a condescending tone, but one that’s indispensable in franchise cricket.
