IND vs WI Live Cricket Score, 2nd Test Day 3: Campbell, Hope give WI hope as they win a session at last; trail India by 97 runs at Stumps

Shai Hope finishes on 66 off 103 balls, John Campbell on 87 off 145. The partnership between them is on 138 off 208 balls. West Indies have actually won a session here. Real solid stand here between Hope and Campbell but the big question is always going to be whether they can survive the first half an hour tomorrow. 97 runs is still a lot to get and well, if they are to even begin challening India, they need to add at least 150 more runs on top of that. It means, for all the good work that they have put in, West Indies are not even close to a situation where they can realistically start thinking of avoiding another defeat. However, baby steps are what is needed to revive this once unbeatable Test nation. And today, they took a couple of very encouraging baby steps indeed.

Hope and Campbell have now put up 135 runs off 203 balls for the third wicket for the West Indies. This is hugely positive for the Carribbeans. Meanwhile, India are getting funky with their bowling choices. Here comes Yashasvi Jaiswal to role his arms. He has bowled a grand total of six deliveries in his still relative short Test career.

West Indies 170/2 in 48 overs trail by 100 runs.

Single off the second ball of the 42nd bowled by Jadeja and there it is. Shai Hope's first Test fifty in 31 innings. No West Indies player had scored a half-century before this in this series and now, two have scored in the same partnership. Hope is rightly regarded as one of the best ODI batters in the world but his Test career hasn't quite picked the way it should have since those incredible centuries in England in 2017. Let's hope this is a turning point for Hope.

West Indies 146/2 in 42 overs

And these are not slogs, they are a couple of very, very good cricketing shots. Bumrah sends in a stinker fourth ball, a leg-stump half-volley that is there to be hit. And Hope gleefully sends it through midwicket along the ground for four. It was a hit-me delivery but West Indies have been falling to even these in this series. Bumrah then sends in a fullish ball outside off, Hope drives it on the up off the middle of the bat to the boundary.

He moves to 46 off 66, Campbell on 70 off 109

West Indies 133/2 in 37 overs

Sundar replaces Kuldeep in the 36th over. Campbell is on strike and he is on 65 off 105 balls, Shai Hope on 37 off 58 balls. The West Indies are now trailing by 151 runs.

It isn't yet time for India to be worried really. They would know as much as anyone that one wicket here could trigger yet another collapse.

West Indies 119/2 in 35 overs

Campbell sees through that over from Bumrah without any trouble. Kuldeep continues from the other end and his third ball sits up nicely for Hope to rock back and drives it through cover for four. He is on 37 off 55, Campbell on 64 off 102. Bumrah to continue from around the wicket.

West Indies 118/2 in 34 overs, trail by 152 runs

The stand between Campbell and Hope has now reached 79 in 105 balls. It is safe to say now that it's a shame that this will be their last innings of this series. The West Indies seem to be only starting to come to terms with the Indian conditions and it would've been very interesting to see what they get up to if there were a couple more Tests in this series, if not more. The last time the West Indies played a four-Test series was at home against India in 2016. Their last five-Test series was all the way back in 2009.

West Indies 114/2, trail by 156 runs.

Here comes Jasprit Bumrah to bowl the first over after Drinks.

30 overs bowled by Indians, but no Jasprit Bumrah yet. No Nitish Kumar Reddy as well. Ravindra Jadeja with 10 overs and Washington Sundar with nine have done all the heavy lifting in terms of bowling so far in the scorching Delhi afternoon for India. Kuldeep Yadav has bowled his 5th over.

West Indies are 113/2 after 30 overs. They still trail by 157 runs.

After surviving a couple of close LBW shouts in the past few overs, John Campbell reached his 50-run milestone with a boundary. He and his partner are starting to play a little freely now as we see almost every over yielding a boundary. Both Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav are getting punished.

Deja vu! Another over same situation! Washington Sundar gets hit for a four by Campbell, and on the next ball there is a loud appeal for the LBW. The umpire is not interested so Shubman Gill---once again!!---listens to the pleas of Sundar and calls for a review. But the ball was---one again---pitching outside the line. The predicted trajectory of the ball was crashing into middle. But the umpire's call was not out.

So not out it will be. Campbell is hanging on. Just about!

This contest between Washington Sundar and John Campbell is starting to heat up. Right after getting hit for a boundary, Sundar bowls a ball that hits the batter's pads. Sundar almost forgot to appeal that in his excitement to celebrate that one. But the batter is convinced that there was some glove there. In the video review, the third umpire notes the spike as the ball passes the gloves. But wait, was that spike only there because the bat hit the ground? We can only guess, because both things---the ball cross the gloves and the bat hitting the ground---happened at the same time.

On the next ball, the ball hits the pads again and we have another loud shout from Sundar. Shubman Gill has to actually ask him to calm down and be sure that the ball his the pads first and not the bat. Washi is pushing for the review. So Gill gives in. This time, there is no doubt. The ball hit the pads outside the line, so won't be given.

West Indies trail by 212 runs after 19 overs of their second innings.

First ball back in the post-Tea session and Shai Hope is given out after a bottom edge that is caught behind the stumps. The keeper Dhruv Jurel and the first slip fielder KL Rahul are convinced it's out. The umpire though decides he wants to have a fresh set of eyes on that, so he refers it upstairs. And the third umpire notes that the ball did take a bounce before reaching the catcher. So Shai Hope survives.

Washington Sundar ends with a wicket-maiden.

GONE! Washington Sundar clips the stumps of Alick Athanaze with a delivery that left him scanning through air to get a look at the ball. He did a couple of double takes as if trying to mentally replay the spin of the ball. Spun through at a pace of 89.9 kph by Washi. Delivered from round the wicket. Turned away from the bat. Thuds into the off stump!

"Don't think too much about it. It was the bowler being too good that day," says former West Indies cricketer Daren Ganga in the commentary at the Tea Break for JioHotstar.

West Indies are still trailing by 235 runs after losing their second wicket. And we have Tea! West Indies will now look to survive the third day.

Short ball from Siraj does the trick and India have their first wicket! Tagenarine Chanderpaul tries to hook the ball and ends up slicing it. Captain Shubman Gill comes running down and dives to take a stylish one-handed catch.

The West Indies team's batting order has been woefully inadequate so far in the two-Test series. Today, as openers John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul take the crease once again after India asked the visitors to follow on, the team needs them to put on a good partnership at the top.

There's still a 254-run deficit staring back at them.

Runs have dropped to a crawl at the moment with the West Indies openers scoring 16 runs from the first eight overs. But more importantly, no wicket lost.

After a maiden over from Mohammed Siraj first up, India hand the ball to Ravindra Jadeja for spin from the other end with the ball being just a few overs old.

At the start of the day, captain Shubman Gill had opted for a bowling attack of Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Now, he opted with the other spin-pace attack to try and get early in-roads into this West Indian batting attack.

So the West Indies will follow on, with them still 270 runs short of India's first innings total of 518.

Fifth five-wicket haul in 15 Tests for Kuldeep Yadav.

Kuldeep Yadav has another five-wicket haul in Test cricket after trapping West Indies' Jayden Seales lbw. There was a thesaurus-sized gap between the ball and the bat, as the batter's back pad is hit!

Kuldeep took his last 5-wicket haul in March 2024.

Jayden Seales is starting to turn the screws against Kuldeep Yadav now after playing out 15 balls. Kuldeep is chasing his fifth wicket in the West Indies innings and is starting to take risks in order to get this final wicket. In the process, Seales is starting to cut loose. Twice, he sends a ball from Kuldeep to the boundary. They still trail by 270 runs. And the second new ball is coming soon, because the Indians can use it after this over.

Thanks to the two hits to the fence, West Indies are 248/9 after 80 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah sends Khary Pierre's off stump cartwheeling as the 42-run partnership for the 9th wicket ends. The wicket comes just one ball after Pierre had hit Bumrah for a boundary.

West Indies lose their 9th wicket and now they have to score 98 runs with one wicket in hand to avoid follow on. The visitors trail by 297 runs.

Here we go, second session of day 3 of the second Test between India and West Indies is starting from the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the national capital. And we have Jasprit Bumrah being handed the ball first up.

West Indies still need 102 runs to avoid a follow on, they have two wickets in hand to do it.

So the West Indies batters and the Indian fielders thought it was lunch one over before. KL Rahul walked past the stumps and flicked one bails off. But Richard Illingworth is at his mark with 10 seconds to go officially for lunch. So we will have one more final over before the first session of day 3 ends. Jadeja handed the ball. And the Indians of course won't be complaining because they realise that this would affect the West Indian batters more than them.

Phillip and Pierre manage to play out the Jadeja over without scoring, but more importantly, without losing a wicket.

West Indies get past the 200-run mark as Anderson Phillip hits Jadeja for a boundary after stepping out and hitting over the in-field down the track. Does Phillip understand Hindi?

But just one ball before that shot, keeper Dhruv Jurel was telling Jadeja to stick to the same line he was bowling, because Phillip was closing the face of the bat and working the ball on the leg side.

But as soon as Jurel voices his warning, Phillip smartens up and pummels the ball to the ropes.

Washington Sundar introduced into the attack. He gets drift and the ball gets the pads of Khary Pierre. The umpire raises his finger immediately. No hesitation at all, even though there seemed to be a second sound. Pierre appeals. And the ball seems to be missing the stumps so the third umpire revokes the on-field umpire's decision.

Pierre survives! Just about!

West Indies are edging close to 200-run mark!

This time it's Siraj who rattles the woodwork! He sends back Jomel Warrican just one ball after his loud appeal was turned down by the umpire. The batter tried to drive at the ball, and the ball takes an inside edge and knocks the middle stump out. West Indies in deep trouble as they lose their fourth wicket in just over an hour on day 3.

West Indies lose their third wicket of the day, and once again it's Kuldeep Yadav who does the damage! He has his fourth wicket of the innings now.

This time it's Justin Greaves who departs LBW while trying to reverse sweep the spinner and missing the ball's trajectory completely. The ball hits him on the abdomen guard, and he walks without appealing.

Kuldeep Yadav again ! West Indies lose their sixth wicket of the first innings, and their second of the day, as Imlach gets LBW to Kuldeep. two West Indies wickets gone inside an hour. And Imlach takes a review with him as well after appealing the LBW decision. It's a straight-forward decision for the third umpire: Pitching in line, impact in line, hitting the wickets.

156 runs to avoid the follow on for West Indies.

West Indies lose Hope. Literally!

Kuldeep Yadav sends back the veteran Shai Hope for 36 runs to give India their first wicket of day 3. The batter is completely deceived by the line of the ball. His bat was waiting for the ball to come to the middle stump while the ball drifted and clipped the off stump!

The first breakthrough for India. At Ahmedabad, Kuldeep had hit Shai Hope's off stump too, but with a ball that had turned in. this one turned away.

West Indies in trouble. Nay, deep trouble! They trail by 357 runs with five first innings wickets in hand.

A good second over from Bumrah. Beats the edge a couple of times before ending with a maiden. Making the ball talk so far is India's premium pacer.

Kuldeep attacking from the other end. yesterday, Jadeja bowled 14 overs from this end. There is a rough outside the left hander's off stump, so jadeja was given the ball. But now there are two right-handers at crease, so we have Kuldeep hassling the batters, Imlach and Hope.

Bumrah starts at the other end. Just a slip, a gully, short midwicket in place. Bumrah induces the edge on his second ball itself, but the ball does not carry. Ball's keeping pretty low, and the fielders behind the bat are pretty far.

Bumrah still finding his rhythm. He strays down the leg side on the fourth ball and gives away a four cheap leg byes. On the next ball, he attempts a yorker and ends up giving a juicy full toss to Imlach. On the final ball, he pitches it slightly short and gives width and it hit to the ropes.

West Indies have crossed the 150-run mark! Still trail by 368 runs.

An interesting throw of the dice by captain Shubman Gill. He hands the ball to Kuldeep Yadav first up. And he get the ball to turn wickedly from the first ball itself as Shai Hope tries to get his eye in.

On the fourth ball, he gives it a nice little flight, with some drift, and Hope almost sends the ball towards his stumps.

After 44 overs, West Indies are 142/4

Day 3 of the India vs West Indies 2nd Test is starting off. A warm and crisp morning in New Delhi. This will be a challenging pitch for the West Indies players, especially with their trio of spinners.

India missed a trick yesterday by not having an extra fielder near the bat when a new batter came in, believes Kumble, who's on the ground as part of the Jiohotstar commentary panel.

"You have enough runs on the board. On a surface like this, it's highly unlikely that the ball is going to bounce from a length (and get to the gully). Ideally, you want two fielders in the front to put pressure. The surface is slow. So for you to beat the batter, he needs to mis-read your length. India can bowl slightly wider and then bring the ball in," says Anil Kumble.

"I always try to play as long as I can. If I'm there, I should just take the game forward and play as long as I can. It's (his run-out) part of the game, so it's fine. There is always a thought that what I can achieve and what can be my goal and my team's goal, I just try and be in the game and make sure if I'm in, I should take it long. I was trying to get in, so there was a bit of movement, but when I was in the middle, I was thinking that maybe I'll bat for one hour and then it will be easy for me to score. The wicket is still pretty good, we are bowling very well, we will be seeing as quickly as we can get to them and get them again," Jaiswal said after missing out on a double century due to a run out on day 2.

"There are some players who succumb to pressure. But there are others like Shubman Gill who enjoy the responsibility. Captaincy has definitely changed his mindset. In England we saw that. He wanted to set an example and lead from the front. Yes, he's scoring the big runs with the bat. But more importantly, he's also staying not out. Captaincy responsibility has gotten the best out of him for sure," says former India player Parthiv Patel about Shubman Gill rising in stature over the past year.

Recently, in an interview with the official broadcaster, JioHotstar, Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke at length about his captain, Shubman Gill, who is having his best year with the bat. He has also been elevated to the ODI team captaincy.

“Shubman has passed his most difficult test, and I told him after we won at The Oval, I told him that he just passed his most difficult test in the transition, and from here on, things will be much easier. I hope they get more easier for him because he deserves every bit of it. The amount of criticism he has received, the kind of things people have said about him, it has been unfair. You can't expect a 25-year-old kid to have an average of 50, and score every time everywhere. The kind of potential he has, I was never shocked that he scored 750 runs in England,” Gambhir told JioHotstar in an interview.
