India vs England, 1st Test Day 4 Highlights: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett hold fort as ENG post 21/0 at Stumps, need 350 to win

Bumrah will continue after Siraj was a little expensive in the last over, giving away 2 boundaries to Crawley. Starts with back to back dots. An odd 8 mins left in the match today, according to the commentators. That will probably be 2 overs. Might be even less with Duckett on his hunches after the ball rapped him on the thighs. Nice shot down the ground next but Bumrah gets a hand to it so it's 2 runs. Follows that up with 3 more. 

ENG 18/0, need 353 runs to win 

Here's Siraj to bowl the second over and he starst with a dot as the batter leaves the outswining delivery. The next two deliveries are alos dots as England batters are taking their time to read the pitch. Miaden to start by Siraj.

ENG 3/0, need 368 runs to win 

Here come the two England openers. They probably have half an hr today to get as much as they can. India will look for wickets. Bumrah has the cherry in hand. Crawley on strike and he leaves the first ball. Next one is into the leg side and the batter keeps it out. The sun is out properly now so the ENG batters would be confident. Flicks the next ball and gets 2 does Crawley. Off the mark. 

ENG 3/0, need 368 runs to win 

And finally, the resistance ends. Jadeja gave Prasidh 2 balls to see out. But he tries to go for the big hoick and Bashir has got his man!! Josh Tongue with the catch!! India lead by 370 runs. England will need 371 to win.

Jadeja and Prasidh are frustrating the England bowlers now with Jadeja slapping Tongue for a maximum as India trudge along. Goes to the same region with a pull again, getting a 4 this time!! Gives the strike to Prasidh in the penultimate ball of the over. He just has to survive this one. And he does.

IND 363/9, lead by 369 runs

Single off Woakes' fourth ball of the 92nd over as Jadeja taps it to covers and so India do reach 350 after all. Cost them three wickets to climb that one-run barrier. Krishna keeps out the last two balls of that over. 

Jadeja on 11 off 23, Krishna on 0 off four. 

India 350/9, lead by 355 

Now they are tailenders but surely India would be unhappy with how they have all fallen in a heap in this Test. Bumrah keeps out the hat-trick ball but then gets a thick inside edge on the very next delivery, the ball crashes on to his stumps. India have lost their last six wickets for 16 runs!

Short ball and Siraj gloves it to the wicketkeeper. He walks off shaking that hand. It was a real snorter from Tongue, banged in and angling straight at Siraj's head, the latter was cramped going for the room.

Full length delivery from Tongue outside off to start the 91st over, Thakur chases the width with a big booming drive. Edge and right into Root's chest at first slip.

A single off Woakes's fifth ball of the 88th over from Jadeja does the trick. The lead has reached 350 and India have enough in the tank to push it close to 400, or even beyond. 

Full delivery for the sixth ball of the 86th by Woakes, Karun tries to drive it back where it came from but can't keep it down. Woakes did well to react almost point-blank though, that came at him with a lot of venom.

Chopped on and that is the end of just the most extroardinary knock. On the good length side of short outside off is where that pitched and it rises quite sharply on Rahul. He tries to get on top of the bounce and steer it off side, it ends up taking a bottom edge and crashes onto the bottom of the stumps. A mountain of an innings comes to an end and it is one that has played a mammoth role in India getting their noses in front in this Test.

Carse continues with the new ball in the 83rd over, his second ball is a big outswinger, Nair reaches out for it and it flies over Duckett at gully. No way he could have got to that. Just one more run in that over, off the last ball.

... As India's lead stretches to 320. KL Rahul is on 133 off 240, Karun Nair on seven off 29. Nair seems to have hunkered down after that rather acrobatic start. 

India 314/4 in 80 overs

Headingley looking slightly sunnier as centurion KL Rahul and newcomer Karun Nair, who's batting on 4, walk out for another stint in the middle. Bashir handed the ball for the first over back! Here we go! 

What a session this has been for India. 

In Session 1 of the day, India scored 63 runs from 24.1 overs at a run rate of 2.61. They lost the wicket of captain Shubman Gill there. 

But in Session 2, thanks to Rahul and Rishabh Pant scoring centuries, India scored 145 runs in 27 overs at a run rate of 5.37. pant's dismissal, while he was looking for the big hits, was the only blemish in that second session. 

KL Rahul is the first Asian opener to record three centuries in England, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri. Rahul now has more hundreds than any England opener in England since his first Test in 2018, notes The Indian Express' Lalith Kalidas. 

About Rahul's batting partner, Pant, Lalith notes: Rishabh Pant becomes only the 2nd wicket-keeper in history after Andy Flower to hit centuries in both innings of a Test. Pant is the 5th Indian to hit 2 away hundreds in a Test after Gavaskar (2), Vijay Hazare, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli and the 1st to hit in England. 

And inevitably, Rishabh Pant departs for 118 runs after trying to smash the ball over the rops but top edging the ball to the fielder at long on. He's certainly showed multiple shades to his batting today. 

Karun nair, who has a lot to prove here, walks out to bat with KL Rahul.

So the century out of the way, Pant switches from first gear to fourth! He plunders 19 runs off Joe Root's third over to race from 101 to 116 in the span of a single over. And that over also sees him leapfrog KL Rahul on the scoresheet with the elder statesman batting on 113. 

This is some T20 flash from Pant here! 

Rishabh Pant gets to his second ton of the first Test at Leeds. And it's a very uncharacteristic way to get there: off a single. And the celebration is even more uncharacteristic, no cartwheels from him. Pant played 26 balls in the 90s before he got to the century.

Even Sunil Gavaskar -- just like all the fans in the stands -- is spotted demanding a handspring celebration from Pant.

But the batter's not doing it. Some other times he says! 

Rishabh Pant has now slowed down as he approaches his century. He's been in the 90s for a while. But he seems to be in no hurry. In the stands, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri are out on the balcony in anticipation of Pant getting his second century of the Test. In the Team India balcony, you see captain Shubman Gill getting nervous. But Pant, who has been out several times in the 90s, is biding his time, letting go balls that are outside the off stump. 

Joe Root comes in to ball and off the final ball of his second over, bowls a full toss on the leg side that Pant cannot put away. He takes a run that will bring him on strike again for the next over against Bashir. Pant is on 99 runs. After the over ends, he shouts showing his frustratation.

And India have their fourth centurion at the Leeds Test. After Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant in the first innings, Rahul gets to the three-figure mark in the second essay! And he gets there just after playing 202 balls. What a compiosed century from Rahul here. Came at a time when India could have been down and out after losing captain Shubman Gill's wicket in the first session of the day. 

And he immediately sprints off to the team's dressing room. 

So the last over from Bashir fetched India nine runs and you get the feeling that Pant and Rahul have changed the gears. 

And the stats back this: In the first session of the day, India had scored 63 runs from 24.1 overs at a run rate of 2.61. But now, in 12 overs since lunch break, India have scored 68 runs at a run rate of 5.67. 

The official broadcast shows that Rishabh Pant now has the third most runs by a visiting wicketkeeper in England in the longest format of the sport. 

The charts are led by a certain MS Dhoni, who got his 778 runs in 23 innings. Rod Marsh is second with 773 runs from 35 innings. 

And Pant? Pant just got his 745 runs (and counting) off 19 innings at an average of 41.4 while he has threehalf centuries and thrree tons.

Pant gets a slice of luck! He edges the ball from Tongue and the ball flies past the fielder posted at first slip. A ball later, Pant works the ball away on the legside and runs one to complete his hald century. 

This is 16th Test half century in 77 innings. Pant's half century (51*) comes off 83 balls.

378 vs India at Birmingham in 2022

359 vs Australia at Leeds 2019 

332 vs Australia at Melbourne 1928 

315 vs Australia at Leeds in 2001 

305 vs New Zealand at Christchurch in 1997

India have currently racked up a lead of 186 with seven wickets in hand. They will be a little wary of their middle order and tailend, considering they lost their last seven wickets for 41 runs in the first innings at Leeds. 

After playing some circumspect cricket, Pant hits two back-to-back fours. The first time, he tried to drive the ball and edged it. Thankfully there was no first slip there to pounce on it. But on the second ball, Pant's slapped the ball throught the off-side for a boundary. And then, after allowing three balls to pass him by without any damage, on the final ball of the over, Pant frees his arms again to a ball that's short and outside off. This one doesn's make it to the ropes though. 

India extend their lead to 172 runs as Pant nears his half century in the second innings after a century in the first. 

Here we go, we're back with the second session of the 4th day. And Tongue will start us off against Rishabh Pant. 

Pant's on 31 while his batting partner KL Rahul is on 72 after being dropped once in the first session by Harry Brook. 

As Broad said earlier, this promises to be an intriguing few hours of Test cricket. 

Dinesh Karthik translates what Rishabh Pant was telling himself as caught by the stump mic.

Talking on the JioHotstar broadcast in the lunch break, former England cricketer Stuart Broad says: "England have a very positiive mentality. England will be saying in that dressing room that a target of 320 or 350, we will chase that. I think India do need to be a little bit watchful, but play with an intensity that is looking to put the bad balls away. Because this ground is a fast scoring ground, so if someone gets in, they can make you pay. So it's going to be a really intriguing next couple of hours actually. If England get two or three wickets quickly, you feel like it might be be advantage England. If India get through the next hour only losing one wicket, then Rishabh Pant can go through the gears, it will be advantage India."

The first session ends. And now we have just five more sessions remaining in the first Test between India and England. 

KL Rahul is still in the middle, batting on 72 runs from 157 balls, after being handed a lifeline from Harry Brook on 58. 

India go into lunch with a lead of 159.

24.1 overs in that session saw 63 runs beinbg scored for the loss of 1 wicket at a run rate of 2.61.

Ben Stokes digs in the ball, and the ball takes the bottom edge of the bat from KL Rahul and hits him flush on the groin. The ball did not climb up as much as he expected it to and was a few clicks slower than he expected. Rahul needs a minute or two to get himself  recover. Then after the over ends, he sinks to his knees, still in some pain and England skipper Ben Stokes walks past rahul with a noticeable smirk. Nothing to make a blow like that worse than having the man who inflicted it smirk at you.  

Bashir replaces Tongue in the 46th over. Rahul managed to get a rare boundary off the first ball of the previous over bowled by Stokes, driven with authority through cover. He is on 70 off 148, Pant on 27 off 50. 

India 146/3, lead by 152. 

Meanwhile, here is some good news for England and neutral fans, and not so good news for the Indian ones, Jofra Archer has bowled his first first class over in 1501 days and well, there was a big shout for LBW off the very first ball. His return any time in the Test series would be invaluable for England.

India's run rate is currently about 3.18, which is not ideal at all if they are to somehow post a big enough target for their bowlers to defend later on. Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue continuing Woakes and Carse's good work and for now, there really is no release shot anywhere to be seen for either Pant or Rahul. 

India 140/3, lead by 146

Stokes' fifth ball of the 41st over lands at a length and angles in towards Pant's off stump, the batter tries to play it to cover with soft hands, it ends up taking the edge and goes wide of second slip for four. Stokes has a couple of words with Pant after he tapped the last ball to midwicket. Looks like he is trying to get Pant to try more of those extravagant heaves of his. 

Pant on 24 off 41 balls, Rahul on 62 off 132. 

India 134/3 in 41 overs, lead by 140 runs

Josh Tongue could've got the big wicket in his first over of the day. Rahul guided the fourth ballm of that over between wide slip and gully for four. He tries to steer the next delivery in a similar fashion, ends up spooning it to Brook at gully but it looks like the fielder was caught off guard by the pace at which the ball came to him. Rahul on 58 off 122 at the end of that over, Pant on 18 off 33. 

India 125/3 in 38 overs, lead by 131. 

It's Josh Tongue who will bowl the first over after the drinks break, not Chris Woakes and so changes on both ends for England. Rishabh Pant is on strike, on 17 off 30, Rahul on 54 off 119. 

India 118/3, lead by 124 runs

Brydon Carse taken off after a six-over spell and a roar goes around Headingley as the England captain gets ready to bowl for the first time today. This should probably be the last over before drinks. 

India 116/3 in 36 overs, lead by 122 runs

Rishabh Pant had pulled out last minute before Woakes delivered the second ball of the 32nd over. Woakes responded by homing the ball right into Pant's tenders and the batter howled in pain. In his next over, KL Rahul pulls out last minute before he delivers the second ball as well and this time Woakes looks justifiably flustered. Rahul says that someone was moving in that cover area. 

That over ended in a maiden but there has been quite a bit going on in the last half hour or so. Rahul on 52 off 107, Pant on 15 off 23. 

India 112/3, lead by 118. 

Fifth ball of the 32nd over by Woakes, Pant comes down the track and absolutely clotheslines the ball right past the bowler for four down the ground. In the next over, he takes a massive swipe across the line third ball by Carse, it goes high up in the air behind him. This time Pant looked like he had resigned to his fate but the ball landed safe and went over the boundary for another four. Then the last ball of that over is full and swinginging into the stumps, Pant goes for one of tumbling flicks over his shoulder that finishes with him doing a barrel roll almost, big appeal for LBW that the umpire turns down. Stokes said there were two noises but still goes for the review. There were indeed, two noises. Rishabh Pant lives to fight another day. 

He is on 15 off 23, Rahul on 52 off 101. 

India 112/3 in 33 overs

Carse continuing to hit that hard length, Rahul beaten by the third ball and then Carse goes fuller, Rahul has a bit of a hack at it, the ball goes to the leg side and he runs two to reach 50 in 87 balls. He sees off the next two balls, finishes the over on 50 off 89. Pant on eight off 11. 

India 101/3 in 29 overs, lead by 107 runs

Oh, never change Rishabh! Chris Woakes bowls from the other end for the second full over of the day, Rahul gets off strike second ball and Pant shoulders arms to the first ball that he faces in this innings. The second? Well, the Indian vice-captains comes galloping down the track and swings the bat so ferociously that he almost swings his feet off the ground. The ball takes a thick edge and flies over the slip cordon for four. He had got his first runs in the first innings with a similar shot off Stokes, although that had come off the middle of the bat and gone right down the ground where he intended. Stokes couldn't help but laugh then, Woakes can't help but laugh now. Pant defends the next ball down and then taps the last one to single, asks for a single and Rahul refuses. 

He is on four off four, Rahul on 48 off 78. 

India 97/3, lead by 103 runs

England would've been desperately searching for that one and Carse delivers. He had been hitting that hard length throughout that over, Gill felt that this was a fraction wider, enough for him to go for a shot with a horizontal bat. But it tails in to the Indian captain, takes his inside edge and onto the base of off stump.

The players had gone off before the 24th over could end yesterday due to rain, remember. There is bright sunshine today though at Headingley. Shoaib Bashir bowls the one ball left in his over, KL Rahul on strike, he meets the length delivery with a solid forward defence. Brydon Carse will bowl the next one to really get us underway for the day. 

He is on 47 off 76, Gill on six off 10.

KL Rahul is standing at the ready by the boundary while the England players walk past him onto the field. Shubman Gill coming down the stairs as well.

150 – Jasprit Bumrah became the 30th bowler to record 150 Test wickets in SENA countries (including home bowlers). Only Vernon Philander (20.84) holds a better average than Bumrah (20.88) in the four countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).

11 – Bumrah equalled R Ashwin (11 in 78 innings) for the most five-wickets hauls in the World Test Championship in only 67 innings.

12 – Bumrah equalled Kapil Dev for the most Test five-fors among Indian bowlers in away Tests. The tally is also the highest by any pacer in the 21st century.

30.9 – Bumrah’s strike rate in his last 20 Tests (37 innings) since Jan 2022 for his 103 wickets is the best for any bowler in history in a 20-match sequence, eclipsing Waqar Younis (32.46 for 133 wickets).

15.27 – Bumrah’s average in his last 20 Tests is only bettered by Imran Khan (15.12 for 116 wickets between 1981-85) in a 20-match sequence among all Test pacers.

2 – For the first time in 10 years, two India pacers conceded more than 120 runs (Md Siraj 2/122 and Prasidh Krishna 3/128) in the same Test innings.

6.40 – Prasidh Krishna’s economy rate is the worst for an India pacer in a Test innings conceding at least 100 runs. Only Lahiru Kumara (6.56 for 0/164) has conceded more runs at a higher economy in a Test innings among fast bowlers.

“Everyone knows what a fantastic player Harry is, and I think being able to put really skilled bowlers under that much pressure shows exactly the skills he has got,” he was quoted as saying by The Guardian. “But it is not just slugging, it is very well thought out.”

Pope’s innings may have given England a foothold in the contest, but he said it was Brook’s efforts that “flipped the game.” England ended their innings just six runs short of India’s total, and then took two wickets for 90 runs against the visiting side by the end of Day 3, leaving the match impossible to call going into Day 4 on Monday.

“(Brook has got) the ability to kind of flip a game – we were saying: ‘Oof, if he bats for another hour here we could be in an amazing position.’ That just shows the kind of skill he’s got, and power. It was unbelievably skilled,” the vice captain said.

When asked about his workload and support received from fellow seamers on the Test Match Special, Bumrah said: “Obviously, we are heading towards a transition. A lot of the bowlers are playing here for the first time.

“We, in India, are used to playing on flat grounds. This is slopey, up and down. So, sometimes, new bowlers bowling here can take time to adjust and fight in the right length. So, yeah, this is the experience that I try to share,” said the 31-year-old Bumrah after bowling 24.4 overs, a quarter of the entire English innings.

Jasprit Bumrah would hold his head in his hands, look ruefully at replays of balls missing the bat by a whisker and give that painful smile of frustration when a catch would go down in the slips. And between overs, he would be on the boundary line looking pensive.

The story of England’s fightback of extending their total to 465 all out, six short of India’s 471, was less about Bumrah’s five-wicket-haul and more about the five dropped catches and the ineffectiveness of the other bowlers. The loneliness of Bumrah summed up India’s bowling effort and negated the advantage the batsmen gave them on the first day of the Test.
