Punjab polls: Cong chief seeks support of Dera Sacha Sauda

Dera chief enjoys considerable influence among people in Punjab,Haryana and other areas in the North.

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh on Friday visited Dera Sacha Sauda at Sirsa in Haryana and sought support for the party from its head Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh.

According to Congress sources,Amarinder was with the Dera chief for about an hour and sought support for the party for the January 30 Punjab Assembly elections.

The Dera so far has not made any announcement of extending support to any party even as the campaigning for the 117-Assembly seats going to the polls on Monday would end tomorrow evening.

Politicians from both the Opposition Congress and ruling Shiromani Akali Dal have been making a beeline to seek blessings of the Dera chief who enjoys considerable influence among the people in Punjab,Haryana and other areas in the North.

In the 2007 Punjab Assembly polls,the Dera had supported Congress candidates in Malwa region,where the party was voted to power.

Gurmit Ram Rahim is a close relative of Congress MLA from Bathinda,Harminder Singh Jassi.
