Tripura Police arrested two persons on Thursday in connection with the gang rape of a 13-year tribal girl at Kalyanpur in Khowai that was reported on October 26.

In a statement issued this evening, Assistant Inspector General Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said the allegation of the incident was reported to Kalyanpur Police Station on October 26 and a case was registered under sections, charging the accused with causing grievous injury, outraging the modesty of a woman, rape and wrongful restraint among other charges along with section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

“Based on evidence collected police have arrested 2 (two) FIR named accused persons in connection with the case for their role in the commission of the crime. Raids are being continued to arrest the remaining accused persons”, the police statement said.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that she was taken to an abandoned house at Khas Kalyanpur by the accused persons while she was going to Khas Kalyanpur along with her friends and gang raped,” police said.

The statement also said that all necessary legal steps were taken including medical check-ups and recording of the judicial statement of the sexual assault survivor.

While Tripura police maintain it is giving the highest priority to preventing crime against women in the state, a series of protests are held in different parts of the state, especially over the incident of a gang-rape of a minor at Kumarghat in Unakoti district.

Opposition parties like CPIM and Congress have alleged Tripura Labour minister Bhagaban Das’s son was involved in the incident and held a series of protests at Agartala and Kumarghat, even as the state government maintains that the minister’s son had no part in the incident and that he is being targeted as part of a conspiracy to malign the BJP-led state government.
