Even as Meghalaya threw up a hung Assembly, the Congress, which won 21 seats, has decided to hold a meeting at 11 am on Sunday for electing Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader. The Congress’ tally was down from 29 in 2013, falling 10 short of a simple majority. Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party took giant strides, winning 19 seats. Both parties were making hectic efforts to rope in smaller parties and Independents to form the government. Meghalaya Chief Minister and Congress candidate Mukul Sangma won from both Ampati and Songsak constituencies. Sangma, has been the CM since 2010, retained Ampati seat defeating his nearest BJP rival Bakul Ch Hajong by over 6,000 votes.

A Nationalist Congress Party candidate was killed in Meghalaya, which resulted in countermanding of the polls in one seat.
