Employment in Indian manufacturing industry has increased by 4.1 per cent in 2009-10 over the previous year,while emoluments went up 11.1 per cent in real terms,according to provisional results of annual survey of industries released by the Central Statistical Office on Friday.
The highest share (16 per cent) of total employment in manufacturing in 2009-10 was in the Tamil Nadu,followed by Maharashtra (12.8 per cent),Gujarat (9.8 per cent),Andhra Pradesh (9.6 per cent),Karnataka (7.5 per cent),Uttar Pradesh (6.5 per cent) and Haryana (5 per cent).
Among the states,then highest number of factories were in Tamil Nadu (16.9 per cent),followed by Maharashtra (12.2 per cent),Andhra Pradesh (10.8 per cent) and Gujarat (9.8 per cent).
The survey revealed that total number of estimated factories for 2009-10 stood at 1.58 lakh,2.3 per cent higher than the previous year. Among the industries,highest number of factories were observed in ‘food products’ category,accounting for 16.5 per cent of the total factories. It was followed by ‘other non-metallic mineral products’ accounting for 11 per cent and textiles,8.4 per cent.
At the India level,fixed capital in current prices grew 28 per cent in 2009-10,as a against 25 per cent in the last year.
Highest fixed capital formation depicting the new investments was seen in the ‘basic metals’ industry with 21 per cent growth,followed by ‘coke and refined petroleum products’ at 10.7 per cent. Among the states,Gujarat scored above others with highest fixed capital share of 17.7 per cent,followed by Maharashtra at 14.6 per cent and Tamil Nadu at 9.8 per cent.
The survey reveals in 2009-10,a factory with an average investment of Rs 8.5 crore,provided gainful employment to 74 persons,produced goods and services worth Rs 23.43 crore at at ex-factory (including excise duty) price,and contributed over Rs 3.66 crore to national income.
The survey was carried out during 2010-11 with a reference period being fiscal year 2009-10. Total sample size was 61,080 representing about 30 per cent of the total population.
