Security mechanisms at over 50 major airports across the country are in for an upgrade with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directing the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS),Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to strengthen the security systems in a time-bound manner.

Union Home Secretary G K Pillai on Wednesday chaired a meeting to review various security issues concerning airports in the country. Steps relating to biometric access, construction of watch towers, raising of perimeter walls, provision of adequate security staff, installation of CCTV cameras, provision of dog squads and bomb disposal squads, etc. were discussed at the meeting. A time-bound action plan was drawn up to enhance security at the airports, an MHA statement said.

While no major security deficiencies have been noticed in most of the major airports, sources said some loopholes in the security systems at some airports had been pointed out and the agencies concerned had been directed to plug those gaps.
