The CPM is against setting up of new nuclear plants in the country in view of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, party general secretary Prakash Karat said on Thursday.
People are opposing Jaitapur nuclear plant and they are justified. For that plant, the government is bringing French technology which has been untested. We are against installation of all nuclear plants in view of the disaster that took place at Fukushima in Japan after the devastating Tsunami, Karat told reporters at the partys state headquarters in Kolkata.
Incidentally, the Left Front government had earlier pushed for a nuclear plant at Haripur in East Midnapore district and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had last year signed a deal with the Russian government for setting up a nuclear plant there.
The CPM general secretary accused the Trinamool Congress of enjoying active patronage from the US as allegedly exposed by the WikiLeaks cables.
After 2009 parliamentary elections,a cable from the US consulate said that TMC was pro-US and that the US should cultivate Mamata Banerjee. She should give an explanation for this, Karat said.
Karat also alleged that there was a flow of illegal money as hundreds of crores of rupees were being spent by the Trinamool Congress.
The Election Commission should institute measures like the ones it took in Tamil Nadu to check inflow of illegal money. For example,it can set up checkposts on highways to check if money was being ferried, Karat said.
Karat reiterated the partys old allegations that the TMC was hand-in-glove with the Maoists to destabilise the state. They are talking of change. But what kind of change? The one that will bring anarchy to the state, Karat said.
