The US-led war on terror has failed to weaken its prime target – al-Qaeda – said people in majority of the countries surveyed in a poll for the BBC World Service
•35% of those who polled in India and 54% in Pakistan feel the campaign has no effect on the terror network or made it stronger
•Only 22% believe al-Qaeda has been weakened by the US-led war
•29% say that the war on terror has had no effect on the al-Qaeda
•30% feel it has made the network of Osama bin Laden stronger
In Egypt and Pakistan, far more people have either mixed or positive feelings towards al-Qaeda
•In Egypt: 40% mixed, 20% positive, 35% negative
•In Pakistan: 22% mixed, 19% positive, 19% negative
•44% Indians say they have a negative view of al-Qaeda
•13% say their feelings are mixed and 11% have a positive view of the outfit
•27% believe the US-led war on terror has weakened al-Qaeda
•19% say it has had no effect
•16% believe it has made Qaeda stronger
•38% declined to offer an opinion
Asked who is winning the conflict between al-Qaeda and the US, the predominant view is that neither the US nor al-Qaeda is winning
• In Kenya, Nigeria and Turkey, the dominant view is that the US is winning
• In no country does more than one in five — 21% in Pakistan — believe that al-Qaeda is winning
•Across all 23 countries, just 10% think al-Qaeda is winning, 22% think the US is winning
•Even in the US, only 34% believe that al-Qaeda has been weakened, 50% believe the war on terror has had no effect
