Out for nearly a fortnight after remaining in captivity for 10 months, POTA accused MLA Raja Bhaiyya, has again been sent behind the bars at the Kanpur jail late last night.

Designated POTA court judge Shailendra Saxena took strong objection to Raja Bhaiyya openly moving about in Lucknow despite an April 29 government order which said the Kunda MLA would remain in Kanpur Jail till further orders.

Keep fingers crossed: Venkaiah to Mulayam

NEW DELHI: BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu said here on Friday that UP chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was presiding a ‘‘fragile coalition’’ and ‘‘history alone will tell’’ how this experiment works. Naidu said Yadav was ‘‘leading contradictory forces. The situation for him is not as good as it is made out to be’’. (ENS)

The judge has also served a showcause notice to Kanpur, Lucknow and Mirzapur district officials for dereliction of duty, asking them why contempt proceedings should not be started them as also against doctors who ‘‘advised’’ that Raja and his cousin Akshay Pratap Singh should be allowed medical treatment outside the jail. Akshay, an MLC, was arrested along with Raja and was kept in the Mirzapur jail.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, soon after assuming command of the state, had announced withdrawal of POTA against Raja Bhaiyya, Akshay and his father, terming the decision as politically motivated. However, at a press meet in New Delhi today, Mulayam claimed that he would not use POTA as an instrument to take political revenge, but sidestepped questions on the growing influence of criminals in the state’s politics and on the inclusion of controversial MLAs like Raja Bhaiyya and Atiq Ahmad. Raja Bhaiyya was brought to the SGPGI in Lucknow first and later shifted to the Civil Hospital.

The officials were more than willing to send him back to Lucknow after he attended court in Kanpur yesterday and he had almost reached the state Capital when the personnel escorting him received a message to return to Kanpur where he was shifted to jail late last night.

The POTA judge also pulled up the special judge of the Gangster court in Lucknow, R.A. Kaushik, for revising his own decision and permitting Raja Bhaiyya to attend Assembly proceedings. The judge has also requested the registrar general of the high court to take necessary action against the Gangster court judge on the issue.
