MALEGAON, May 6: Taking undue advantage of an amendment to the Gram Panchayat Act made by the State Government in connection with passage of a no-confidence motion against Sarpanchs, their opponents in different GPs have succeeded in passing no-trust motions against many Sarpanchs in the tehsil in the recent past.

Under the provisions of the amended Act, no-confidence motion were tabled against the Sarpanch of a total of 15 GPs in the month of April alone and most of them were passed too. The number of no-trust motions which fizzled out for some reason or the other could be described as meagre.

Sarpanch of Karanji, Marsul, Bramhanwada, Eranda and Shelgaon Gram Panchayat were the first victims of the new amendment. Baburao Ghuge, sarpanch of Bramhanwada GP, had to step down on April 17 after a no-confidence motion was passed against him by a margin of three votes. In the nine-member GP, five members voted if favour of the motion while two against it. Prakash Ghuge and Nandalal Rathi had reportedly decided to table the no-trust motion against Baburao right from the society elections.

The no-confidence motion tabled against Sarpanch Gajanan Ghuge of Eranda Gram Panchayat, could not be passed because of technical reasons. During the voting on the motion, only three members voted in favour of the motion. As a result, the motion fizzled out. Bhanudas Pandurang Avchar, sarpanch of Kotha GP, had to step down after the no-confidence motion, tabled against him, was passed with a single vote. Four members voted in favour of the motion while three voted against it.

The GP’s were the worst-hit because of the amendment of passing a no-trust motion with simple majority. As a result, the developmental works in the villages are reportedly lying in cold storage.

Sarpanchs’ association too has expressed its resentment over the amendment, it is gathered.
